Missouri requires gray water to be treated. Fecal material found in under garments is a major part of their reasoning. Discharge from water softener is allowed to be surfaced discharged.

I’m in the Springfield MO area, and Never hear that. but we just recently adapted the 2018 building codes, were using 2012 codes till last year.
This is Missouri Dept of Health requirement for septic inspections.
