Not 100 percent but yes French does give you the ability to touch a larger costumer base.
There are 1 million English speaking on the island of Montreal and my verbal french skills are OK but must be improved.
Robert, are you still able to buy organic shingles in Canada? If so, who makes them?
Ken
I will get back to you ASAP.
I have seen ECO shingles made of used tires.
They look like slate and are very attractive and cost effective.
Lots of slate in older parts of MONTREAL. I myself have never done a slate roof from start to finish but preformed many repairs.
I will look this morning.
If I forget get back to me please. I have the flue from hell.
Kenton
I am on the HVAC course and you know were I am going with this now.
You do a great job help Mr. Mili.(apple)
Very good. Love the course and its the lack of upgrading, I needed ( HVAC) that got me into InterNACHI.
I was doing a HI and stopped and explained to the man I had never seen a HVAC system like his.
I looked for schools and did 2 sorry 3 , and 2 were crooks,I stopped looking for 2 years and then the internet was full of American HI courses 2008. PHII was the one course that was OK for I have been seeking HI knowledge everywhere with everyone point me no-were. 5 years and more.
Investigated INACHI.the rest is history.
I tell folks if their shingles last past 15 years now, celebrate!!
Asphalt shingles are available in three main forms: organic asphalt shingles, laminated organic asphalt shingles, and fiberglass asphalt shingles.

Organic asphalt

shingles are made from paper or felt saturated with asphalt to make it waterproof. A top coating is applied, and ceramic granules are then embedded. The granules may contain a portion of copper or tin to discourage moss growth on the roof. Laminated asphalt shingles are made from two distinct layers. They are heavier, more expensive, and more durable than normal organic asphalt shingles.
Fiberglass asphalt shingles are based on a fiberglass reinforcing mat, to which is applied asphalt with mineral fillers. Fiberglass reinforcement was developed as an alternative to the traditional asbestos paper reinforcement.
The following leading roof shingle manufacturers have comprehensive websites, with information on all aspects of roof shingles, including online catalogs, colors and materials for roof shingles, and care and maintenance of roof shingles.

IKO Canada**: IKO is a large North American manufacturer of building materials and, is a leading manufacturer of asphalt roofing shingles. IKO produces three styles of asphalt shingles.
The first is called an Architectural Laminated Style. These include Crowne Slate, RoofShake and the Cambridge series shingles. IKO’s Architectural Style shingles are composed of two pieces of asphalt shingle material laminated together to form one

solid piece. The bottom piece, known as the shim, provides the base of the shingle as well as a contrast in color. The top piece of the asphalt shingle, sometimes called the dragon tooth, provides the depth as well as further contrast in color. They are usually more aesthetically pleasing than traditional 3-Tab shingles. Their Limited Warranties range from 30 years to Limited Lifetime. The style and appearance of Architectural shingles have gained in popularity and have become the most requested style in many markets.
The second style of asphalt shingle manufactured by IKO is known as the Designer Style. Designer Style shingles include Armourshake, Renaissance GXL 30 and Skyline 25. These asphalt shingl

es are made of a single strip construction with interesting features or shapes. IKO Armourshake premium fiberglass-based asphalt shingles provide a dimensional thickness that enhances the rough-hewn, random-cut appearance, texture and profile of classic wood shakes. The Renaissance GXL 30 is a traditional 3-Tab shingle with overlay patches of asphalt and contrasting colors to provide a dimensional appeal. These Designer Style asphalt shingles carry a Limited Warranty of 25 years, 30 years or limited Lifetime.
The third category of asphalt shingles manufactured by IKO is the Traditional Style. The shingles in this category are Aristocrat 25, and Marathon and Gentry series.

These are traditional 3-Tab style shingles, hence, the Traditional Style name. This style has been used for over fifty years in the industry with excellent results. The Limited Warranty in the Traditional Style series of asphalt shingles run 25 or 30 years in duration.

Building Products of Canada:** Building Products of Canada has been producing quality home building and home renovation products for generations. The BP brand reflects an almost legendary craftsmanship that goes back nearly 100 years. Our shingles, ceilings, structural and acoustical panels continue to be the products of choice on literally hundreds of thousands of new homes and home renovation projects each year.
In the trade, BP products are well known for their quality. The quality of finished products begins with the quality of the materials that go into them. BP organic shingles are made with a high grade felt produced in our own mills. This felt and the lighter weight felt used in asphalt felt rolls is regarded so highly that Building Products of Canada is the number one seller of roofing paper in North America. For our fiberglass shingles, we use only Johns-Manville glass mat, widely considered the industry’s best.
It is backing up these products with the fairest, most comprehensive warranties available. The BP 5-Star warranty, applicable on all organic shingles, includes full 100% protection, including material and labour, for up to ten years. It covers not only the shingles, but also the underlayment and the eave protector. And it is fully transferable with no restrictions and no fees attached.
BP shingles are available in Achitect, Classic and Specialty asphalt roofing shingles collections.
Our Main Office is located in Toronto, Ontario.
Organic shingles:
• Have many decades of proven performance on Canadian homes.
• Are softer and easier to work with than glass shingles in cold temperature applications.
• Contain more asphalt and nearly always use a heavier weight reinforcement than glass shingles of similar weight.
• Absorb roof deck stresses better and are more tear-resistant than glass shingles.
• Are typically thicker than glass shingles and therefore hide minor imperfections in the roof deck or the old shingle layer.
Organic shingles continue to be the most commonly used asphalt shingle in Canada, but glass shingles are also available. If you have a well-ventilated, solidly constructed roof deck, and the shingle roof system is properly applied according to good roofing practices and the manufacturer’s application instructions, generally both shingle types will perform well.
Did not understand organic meaning asphalt.
WOW that came out of left field.
I do not look at every aspect to the end degree.
Not for shingles.
I guess I have to start.
Organic simply is a new term to describe the cellulosic (paper) mat that is the beginning of the shingle. The asphalt used in both paper or fiberglass based shingles may loosely be considered organic as it once was living material millions of years ago!
Thanks Brian
As mentioned I was NOT thinking and WAS sick, now my head is clearing ( thank GOD ) and I can concentrate on whats being said.
I was perplexed by the wording ORGANIC SHINGLES that was being asked of me from Kenton.
Man if those things are organic then’’ MONSANTO’’ has done its job correctly in bamboozling the world with there chemical and biological and genetic manipulation of mother natures precious gifts to us.
I was just about to eat one to see if it is true.
Now that I am a bit better I will look into Kentons question about ,more diverse shingles and manufactures of said products.
As for organic?
I will TRULY look into that for clarity.
Thanks Brian I truly enjoy your efforts at helping instead of attacking members and InterNACHI and its true value to the industry.
Sorry all
I just got it,my wording confused you.
I used glass seldom, but yes used it when the home owner indicated there preferred material and they supplied the materials.
Yes 90 percent of my roofs have been done with organic shingles.when doing shingle applications.
Would not a slate roof be more organic in composition?
The only manipulation is the wafering of the stone.
I find it hard to wrap my head around shingles being organic.
20 yrs…

That’s just a little sun damage
Over cooked. :p;)
In Quebec ,it is illegal to sell 10 year warranted shingles.
The only shingle products here START at 20 year warranted.
Those IKO malefactor shingle would be litigated and fines imposed upon the sellers of, as they were refused from manufacturing that quality of shingle and all others manufactures told the same,in the early 80.
Fiberglass shingles are those that consist of a fiberglass mat embedded in asphalt.
Organic shingles are those that consist of a cellulose mat embedded in asphalt. The cellulose mat may be made of wood pulp or recycled paper or some similar mixture… something that absorbs water.
I have not been able to find any company still manufacturing cellulose shingles.
exactly Marcel.
I am sure i am within the wide margin of plus or minus 5 years.
There were indents in the shingles where the old Package unit was replaced with the newer 1998 Package unit… so at least 12 yrs…
Hi. Kenton, just like me, I have to search until I find something.
This might help here;

**History **
Asphalt has been used as a building material for thousands of years. Ancient Babylonians used it as mortar between clay bricks and as a waterproofing liner in canals. Roll roofing, consisting of long strips of asphalt-coated felt with a finishing layer of finely crushed stone, has been manufactured in the United States since 1893. In 1903, Henry M. Reynolds began marketing asphalt shingles he cut from sheets of roll roofing. By the 1920s, this roofing material had become so popular it was sold through mail-order catalogs. By the 1950s, the typical asphalt shingle looked much as it does today, including the tab-forming cutouts.
Since the late 1950s, manufacturers have sought to develop inorganic base materials as alternatives to the traditional organic felt. Inorganic bases are desirable because they are more fire resistant than an organic base; furthermore, they absorb less asphalt during the manufacturing process, so the resulting shingles weigh less. Asbestos was used in shingle mats until its related health risks became well known. Improvements in fiber-glass matting have made them the most popular asphalt shingle base material in the industry since the late 1970s.

Hi Marcel,
I am just trying to confirm that organic shingles are no longer being manufactured.
The Asphalt Shingle Manufacturer’s Association claimed that they were, and gave me a couple of names of Canadian companies, but both companies denied that they still manufacture organic shingles.
Well, I am finding interesting information Kenton.

You might like that video on Warranties above.
Here is one I found that claims organic shingle manufacturing stopped in 2005.
As of 2005 all organic based shingles have been discontinued due to the de-lamination and decay of this type of shingle. We have valuable information and confirmation letters from the major manufacturers of these products that will assist you in the warranty process. If your roof looks like it’s been curling and decaying, you may have an organic-based product on your roof and be eligible for a warranty replacement. Give us a call and request a free inspection. Many of our customers who have these products have been able to get full-replacement roofs without any cost to them. Our Project Managers are always working to educate ourselves and our homeowners of the newest information and resources out there.
