I'm calling for a replacement of the Water Heater as it is old and leaking, but still would like to know about this method of installing at TPRV.

good question, I don’t know, but maybe the flames from the tennis shoe would help heat up the valve and cause it to activate icon_lol.gif

The sensor on the tpr valve needs to be in the top 6 inches of water in the tank, the tag on top will indicate how long it is. That would be the first thing I would check on this type of installation.
