You can simply drag a chain across a concrete slab to listen for defects…it works well…and is less expensive than a portable ultrasound, etc.
Its not really a residential basement issue though, but it is for parking garages, and other applications where the integrity of the concrete/presence of patches is of concern.
A residential poured slab is merely sitting 'between the footings, etc…so finding a holiday in the slab is not a big deal anyway…and it would have to be pretty serious for an appliance to collapse far enough to break a gas line, etc.
I agree that its “cheating” to be allowed to use a sawzall and sledgehammer to demo a place to look for hidden defects…on a non-destructive inspection.
Its supposed to be entertainment of course…pretty much all shows that involve a trade/profession are misrepresented though, medical, police/forensics, and so forth.
I do primarily forensic inspections…on TV (CSI, etc…), the LAB people run into the lab, inject a sample into a machine, and get a result in a few seconds…and then grab a gun and run out to the site.
In real life, the SAME machine takes more like 24 hrs to do the same analysis, AND, there were 200 samples ahead of that one in the cue before you got to even inject the one they needed…
…So, in real life, a sample comes to the lab, sits for a few days waiting its turn, then takes a day to analyze…and the results are NOT displayed with a giant flashing/beeping “They are GUILTY” banner…they need to be INTERPRETED first…
…and the lab guys NEVER grab a gun and run out to the site, they email a report to someone who has someone ELSE do that.
And so forth.
IE: Holmes is the CSI of the inspection world.
Yes, my post was in jest
Seems there’s a mounting distaste for Mike Holmes as more and more info starts to surface about him. People are catching on to his unrealistic and out of bounds comments and high horse attitude.
And, starting to see that his cronies are not the perfect, walk on water pros he claims to align himself with. Scroll through some of his roofer’s performances and you’ll see that nobody can claim they are without reproach.
So … I am waiting for the various associations to either get together, or individually mount a PR campaign to thwart what continues to be regular jabs by Holmes and his PR machine at our profession, whilst on the other hand employing NACHI/CAHPI/OAHI members!
He is obviously eating his cake and talking out of both sides of his mouth.
Scott May: I saw this one too. After all this they still didn’t get a proper deck with features recommended today. No graspable handle from the back deck despite pointing out that they build better than Code. LOL
No flashing over the ledger either. I did not like the comment about the gas line breaking and the only repair was to make the floor solid underneath I guess a flex line with new CSST is not good enough for this show. I have never run across a basement floor cave in I wondered how he came up with the idea.
Hey Kevin…it sells air time…I wanted to fight myself after watching the dribble. The whole show now is about how many commercials they can fit into an hour long show. I Pvr’d the last show 28 minutes of commercials
“The furnace might blow up if the floor settles”…maybe when monkeys fly out of his butt! Most of the repairs that he makes he “chooses” to make with the exception of mold.
Ray you are right on …there needs to be a united front against this blow hard…he is terrifying people and an embarrassment to the HI industry! IMO
Ray you and I and a few others have asked, pleaded and begged for cooperation from others .
I have phoned and tried to get our Canadian association all going in the same direction .
Wrong thing for us to do ,The insults started and have not ended.
We have been blamed many times and the others have not once tried to help all Canadian home Inspectors .
They all feel they should be the only group to make decisions .
They all think they are the best and no one else knows zip.
I do hope I get too talk to the PTB this fall Having been a member of four different Canadian groups I saw just how bad some of them are.
They all have a click who feel they can make all the decesions for the Canadian Homies.

Not any more…, especially in Alberta, and B.C. Several associations are legally recognized for licencing purposes. Who’da thunk!
So much for the vision of one big happy association under the vision in Ontario by at least two associations in Ontario whose fortunes have waned. It’s as splintered now as it ever was, and will be in Quebec by all appearances.
And me thinks its a good thing.
Yep! Look at the one recognized Home Inspection Schooling “Carson Dunlop” No more support for there outdated schooling but still one recognized by OAHI.
2 year “Home Inspection technician Diploma” not doing so great either. Endorsement of this was not well received by many already doing inspections so who is going to answer for this, only time will tell.
How about this little gem I recieved in my junk mail!

We have many who do the same in Canada , Including Directors of some of the Associations ,the name is MONEY,MONEY ,MONEY ,
They try and tell us they are helping the industry??? … Roy
Whatsa’ matter? Not selling any???
Could this be the first sign of the public finally tiring of Mr Holmes? Hopefully.
That was my first thought also. Kathleen.
We can only hope!
