Does anyone know how many inches of exposure a 3 tab asphalt shingle can have?

Conventional shingles are designed for a 5 inch exposure. I’ve roofed plenty of roofs at 4 inch exposures which yields a roof that is entirely three layers thick. Have to be careful doing this though because it changes the the way the roof looks and may conceal some of the designed “shadow lines”

There are some newer products that are designed to be put on at larger exposures on big roofs to maintain a sense of scale.

Also, in some cases you can get away with using shingles on a shallow-pitched roof if you decrease the exposure.

5" to 5 1/4" is the typical exposure.
