Hi all,

This poll is in response to another post I saw regarding the cost of home inspection web sites. Your responses are appreciated.

If you don't yet have a web site presence, RealtySites.info also offers web sites for NACHI members for under $200, and we have flexible payment options to let you spread your web site costs over a full year. For information on our special NACHI pricing, please visit http://www.realtysites.info/nachi.php.

I think the best option for us is to just not vote on the poll.

Respond here, just not vote.

Better yet, maybe we should all vote "nothing", then maybe their price will come down to "nothing". ![icon_biggrin.gif](upload://iKNGSw3qcRIEmXySa8gItY6Gczg.gif)

I agree, it is better than the Marlboro Man, but it needs to be in one section, not scattered all over the forum. I could live with them all in one section. There is just no need to allow people to advertise whatever wherever on this forum.

But, then, a couple of us have suggested that already.

Hi Richard,

Thank you for your kind words. To clarify, I was specifically approached by NACHI to create a system to enable members to have affordable home inspection web sites for its members. Therefore, I feel it's only fair to make them known, especially when higher priced alternatives are being promoted to the group.

As I understand it, the Misc Discussion group is supposed to be fair game. I certainly hope that no one was offended by my creating a poll for my own curiosity (and to see how the Poll function works), or by the fact that I am participating in this discussion group.

Regards,

Roberta

Roberta your OK icon_wink.gif. I think it’s the Marlboro man (cigarettes suck) that has made us more concerned about ads. Jerry, another good idea about having a forum specifically for ads that would not be allowed anywhere else on the board.

Thanks Erol - I feel loved! icon_smile.gif

I like your suggestion about creating a separate area for vendors, although I shudder to think what would end up being posted there! I run some moderated discussion boards on a few of the web sites I manage like Jobfiler (free job search tools) and NederlandInternet.com, and am always weeding out the crap posts.

Which is why I approach posting on NACHI with a grain of caution, instead of blasting out "WE DO NACHI WEBSITES!" to the forum.

Anyhow, it's getting late here, so I think I'll go back to my beer and pizza and give it a rest.

Cheers,

Roberta

My site costs me $95.90 a year including my domain name.

My site designer costs me 10's of $1000's as she is my wife.

I have been learning how to build them on my own as she has been very helpful and fun. I still have a LONG way to go in building mine but it's something to do during the slow times and I'm learning something new which is always's good.

After a researching I decided to use nzwebit, as they have a lot to offer, and if you can build it yourself its a reasonable price.
I believe they also provide web page developing and maintenance.
www.nzwebit.com

Roberta, I can see where your pricing isn't bad really for a completely hosted page/s.

I recommend you add your site to the "Useful Links" page on the NACHI home page menu as a lot of folks look there and there's no charge as you know.

Register your own domain name through someone like www.namesecure.com before you do anything. Some of these services end up registering your domain name in their name as the owner.

When you get your site built you can either redirect using the namesecure tools, or transfer your domain name to the new DNS Servers, but it's yours, registered in your name.

IF you are a do it yourselfer:

If you can do text boxes in Microsoft Word or some other word processor you can do your own site using the Site Builder stuff.

For a $15.00 set-up and 8.95 a month you can do what I did.

Build your own site at www.tripod.com for free if you let them do advertising on your site and a minimal $10.00 or so a month for e-mail and website without advertising.

Use their Site Builder tools.

I started with the free one just to dink around with it and try it out. Then when I got the hang of it, I went with the paid one and built the real site.

Using the File Manager tools I've created a "Reports" directory. I print my reports, including photos, to a password protected PDF File and upload them to the website then e-mail the links to my clients.

For what it matters, I’ll chime in.

I am giving Roberta a try for a web site. As has been stated in other places: We do what we do best, let them do what they do best. (not verbatim)
I've half a**ed my free web page at http://reporthost.com/warner and it's made me some leads, (once found through findaninspector) but I have tweaked on it for a year now. But try to find me on a search engine... ![icon_rolleyes.gif](upload://iqxt7ABYC2TEBomNkCmZARIrQr6.gif) I did learn some html code which I'm proud of (it's not spectacular though). I found myself devoting more time to the web page than trying to learn new inspection stuff and decided that was not acceptable. Therefore I am turning internet stuff over to Roberta at Yalia and Realtysites.

Don't get me wrong, it's fun to do the web site thing on your own, but majorly time consuming.

Erby's site (tripod.com) is a good do it yourself site. We have our bands web site here ( http://twofeetshy.tripod.com ) and we have a lot of fun messing with it, but again it's time consuming. I was considering this for the business but decided no.

I for one am glad Roberta (and Nick) posted. I bit, and liked what I saw. Fast loading pages, plenty of options, professional, and a decent price. Time is money, and I find it far more cheaper to let her develop a web site than for me to screw around for another year and still not be where I need to be. Therefor, I sent her some business.

Yes, maybe an area for advertisers is warranted. Honestly, I probably wouldn't read it much though, like I do this Misc. Discussion area to catch up on the new stuff. I'm glad I stumbled across Roberta's posting.

Again, just thought I'd chime in my thoughts.

Hi Bill,

Thanks again for the vote of confidence. Your domain is registered, and the initial design is nearly done. The design is a customization of the classic blue NACHI template, utilizing the color palette to match your existing business card and brochure. I also designed a quick logo for use on the web site and wherever else you may want to use it - this was not part of the original project scope but I felt it was important to the overall look & feel. I did the logo at no charge, of course, since we never charge additional fees for work outside of scope without prior permission from our clients. I am currently working on implementing the content management system we discussed so that you will be able to update your own web site content without requiring a designer's help.

I ran into a bit of a time crunch this week, as I was appointed to the Board of Trustees for the Town of Nederland, Colorado, but am working hard to ensure that we are still on time with this project. The site should be ready for your review by this weekend. Once you have reviewed the initial build, you will be able to make changes to both content and to the look/feel since nothing is set in stone until you have reviewed and approved the site design.

The Document Upload software I'm developing for Online Report Delivery will be ready to go within the next 2-3 weeks. A little pad time there for the Thanksgiving holidays.

Again, thank you for sharing your thoughts with the group as well. Please let me know if you have any questions on the project or web stuff in general.

Regards,

Todd, I can offer you the basic package for $199 plus $5.25 for hosting. That’s $262 - less than $289 by $27 (oh boy!)

The customization of the template to match Bill's brochure was accomplished without any fees, as I have built several of our templates to be easily modifiable and anything that takes me 10 minutes or less really isn't worth the hassle of trying to "upsell". I've been doing web design now for over 8 years - you'd be surprised how many things I can do in ten minutes or less! ![icon_wink.gif](upload://ssT9V5t45yjlgXqiFRXL04eXtqw.gif)

Anyhow, the document upload feature is the only thing that Bill is paying extra for. He's in on our beta program however, at a substantial discount from the price listed on the web site. The content management system, the links manager, the custom content, articles, etc., is part of our standard value-priced package, which I think is very fairly priced at the $199. The companies that charge $500, $600, even $1200 or more for basic home inspection web sites are clearly in it strictly for the profit... I'm more about spreading the love.

Anyone can call themselves a web designer and hang a virtual shingle out offering web sites for the masses. Before you go with any designer, ask for their references and portfolio links to see what they have accomplished. Find out if they really know how to code, or if they are simply doing their layouts in a WYSIWYG drag & drop editor like Front Page or Adobe GoLive. This may not seem important at first, but it will be when it comes to knowing whether your designer will be capable of adding functionality to your web site, or even of fixing pages when they are broken.

As for myself, I'm not going to tell you - I'll show you. Here are some of the sites that I have built for my company over the past year or so. Most are database driven and all are optimized to load quickly and be search engine friendly:

http://www.yalia.com
http://jobfiler.com
http://www.citystreetbagels.com
http://www.laurafarris.com
http://www.winhealthpartners.org/providers.php
http://www.earthpalette.com
http://www.brookswags.com

This is just a partial list - see rdulay.com for my entire portfolio, and my resume if you're interested. Want more? Check out what my customers have to say about me by visiting http://www.yalia.com/quotes.php?qid=1.

Anyhow, give me a call and let's talk about it. You can reach me at 303-258-0333, generally until pretty late (notice the time?), but usually not terribly early in the morning

Todd, I'd love to work with you on your web site (once I'm done with Bill's of course). I'm confident you'll be pleased with the end result and the value for your money. If you're not, you're welcome to trash me all over this forum - that's pretty much a given, I'd think. Anyhow, I hope to hear from you soon. You can also contact me directly through Yalia.com.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Regards,

Roberta

P.S. Sorry to ramble, it's after midnight in Colorado and I think I'm getting punchy
