I agree, David, $569 is hardly a drop in the bucket, and $39.95 for monthly hosting is unheard of these days in any other industry but real estate. A web site can be an excellent marketing tool for independent business owners, when it’s priced right and done right.
As a matter of fact, I met with Nick Gromicko a few weeks ago, who expressed his concerns regarding the high price of home inspection web sites. I did a little research and found that this industry was overrun by web designers who were charging a premium for template based web sites, and that the cost of custom web design was even higher.
This is why we came up with the $199 price point for NACHI member web sites from RealtySites.info by Yalia Technology Design. On top of this, we charge only $5.25 a month in hosting.
We also went with a template based system with an emphasis on features that we thought would be important to our customers, like a free content manager (so you can update your web site yourself), a free links manager (so you can increase your traffic through reciprocal linking), a document upload feature (so you can deliver your reports to your clients electronically), and more. Our sites are optimized to load quickly and to be easy for the search engines to find and index.
Before we launched the web site last week, I researched the major providers in this field, and put all of their pricing and features side by side. I looked not only at the upfront costs of building the site, but also at the cost of maintaining a web site with that provider over a three year period. You can find this information at http://www.realtysites.info/compare.php.
I'd invite you to check this out and let me know what you think of it. I hope that it meets your needs.

It is a great deal. That price includes your initial website design (set up fee) web hosting and mainteance for an entire year. The maintenance includes changes in text, pictures, links, and page add-ons you might have throughout the year. It is also full time customer service. This isn’t one of those do it yourself packages where you we get you up and running and leave hanging. It’s all inclusive!

David,
You may want to examine the hidden costs in the other websites offered. They are do it yourself as far as maintenace goes. If that’s for your looking for thats a great deal but domain names, etc. is not included amount other things. Check out our price comparison on our website! We too met with Nick Gromicko, the Executive Director or NACHI, a few hours ago and he agreed the pricing is fantastic for an all inclusive site!
We would love to work with you. I am sure you will make the decision that’s best for you.

These yearly fees for websites just kill me. I don’t understand the purpose of paying hundreds of dollars a year for a website. I have one website for my building company up currently and my HI and RE site are in the works. My sites only cost me $1000 PERIOD! They are mine with no yearly usage fees other than my hostings fees and maintainence, probably about $100 a year…not bad comparitively speaking. See this makes sense, to me anyway. Can I get a cheaper site? Sure I used to do my own but it didn’t look as nice as my current site. I think my current building site looks great…tell me what you think. www.crouchhomes.com

Hi Thomas,
The $569.99 fee includes the set up of a customized website, maintenance, hosting, and all changes throughout the year. From that point forward the yearly fee would only be the hosting costs per month which I believe is under 10 dollars.
There is no $569 annual fee to maintain your site. Visit our site at www.inspectiondesign.com to see what all of our sites include. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions at all.
Thanks,
Susan

Hi Susan,
Thanks for the info. While the price is fair I am loyal to my designer as she has came up with some excellent ideas for me. As well she does all of my business card, brochure, and print as designs ![icon_smile.gif](upload://b6iczyK1ETUUqRUc4PAkX83GF2O.gif) Your sites look good but I have been spoiled with macromedia flash. I also like the way my page info fits into one screen. I have received many complements from people on the ease of use and finding info. I am sure you can respect my loyalty ![icon_smile.gif](upload://b6iczyK1ETUUqRUc4PAkX83GF2O.gif)

Hi Thomas,
Good point about the hosting. Companies that charge you $25-50 a month for hosting are simply padding their pockets at your expense. There are plenty of hosting companies out there with good packages starting around $7-10 a month - anothing above that is simply profiteering.
I have in the past recommended 1-2 Wonderhosting to clients who are looking for an outside hosting company; I also maintain a set of servers in a Class A data center which I use for my own customers. For a list of companies offering competitive hosting packages, see http://www.i-bargains.com/deals_internet.php.
P.S. Glad to see you are loyal to your designer - it's that sort of loyalty that makes our jobs worthwhile.

I use OneWebHosting.
My web package costs about $115 for the year. It includes domain registration. It includes customer support. It includes e-mail. It includes a load of tepmplated designs, and an intuitive development tool, so literally anyone can design and publish their website. The service also allows you to upload your own sire, if developed in Front Page, as well as a couple of others.
I have used their service for about 2 1/2 years. The site has never been down.

Joe, that sounds like a pretty good deal. Given the uptime, I’d venture to guess they are hosting on Linux / Unix!
I rebooted my server last week for the first time in 21 months. Prior to starting my own web site firm, I was an eCommerce Programmer for Roadrunner Sports, where I swear we had to reboot Windows 3-4 times a week *just to keep it happy*. And yes, I'm running Linux as well.

Thanks Joe! It sounds like you really had your hands full in that previous life! It’s funny how many home inspectors I have met who used to be techies of one sort or another - seems by and large they are much happier as home inspectors!
Perhaps I'll have to keep that in mind for when I'm ready to hang up my PHP/MySQL shoes...
Cheers,
Roberta
