Is there a maximum amount of spacing that should be between shingles? This isn’t right to have this much spacing, but also I still feel like it would function correctly.
Then, it would be a cosmetic issue, eh?
It looks like shingle racking was used for the install.
That’s why I was hoping to get more input. Because it doesn’t look right to me, but I couldn’t figure out how it would be a problem. I’ll have to take a look at the rack PDF you sent. Thanks!
That pattern is suspect of something happening underneath. I would look for some separation in the sheathing, truss movement, in the attic.
I would write it up as improper installation was viewed to the roof surface materials.
I agree with Lon. It looks like there might be some kind of movement going on somewhere.
Do you have a picture along the plane of the roof? To detect any rise, etc.?
I don’t have a picture since I am no longer at the job. But there wasn’t any rise in the roof. No bulge or anything like that.
Barring any other anomalies (fascia separation, sag, etc.) aside from the shingle issue, probably a sloppy job at the racking install then.
If it isn’t installed correctly (and you know it isn’t) then it isn’t right.
It looks like somebody did a crap measurement (or didn’t measure) and was trying to make up space as they approached the eave, realizing they were going to be trying to nail a 1.5" wide shingle at the edge. Like you said, might not cause a leak, but a poorly installed roof doesn’t bode well for any future potential warranty claim, so I’d count it as more than cosmetic.
Would we call that a “course correction?”
