The impact crater will have loosened or missing granules on the edges with the center more pressed in the asphalt. You should also look for splits or damage starting on the inside out.

The roof in the photo is an asphalt shingle roof. This asphalt shingle roof is a three tab shingle roof. The way the shingles were installed was by using the racking method seen in the photo where the joints stagger in a straight line up the roof. The shingles show signs of distortion and face cracking. To determine if roof needs replacing, I advise that the customer consult with a roofing contractor to determine whether the roof should be replaced or not.

Improperly Located Nails: The most common nailing defect that I find with asphalt shingles is improperly located nails; specifically, high nails. When shingles are located too low on a shingle, its an obvious defect that anyone with a good eye can usually spot from the ground. This is probably why I dont find this defect all that often; its just too obvious of a defect for most roofers to leave uncovered.

This photo shows several areas of concern, the first of which is the detritus on the roof, this will keep moisture against the shingles therefore accelerating their eventual failure. Also noted is the shady nature of the roof and perhaps the have not bonded properly.
