Mastering roof inspections: Asphalt composition shingles part 1. After reading this article it reaffirms what was taught in the course. The components of the asphalt shingles consist of fiber glass matt and asphalt covered with granules. Although some Asphalt shingles were made with cellulose matts. These are becoming harder to find when inspecting homes.

The shingles stacked at the ridge line can also be seen. All the components are properly installed and ready for the asphalt shingles to be installed.

A roof impacted by a Hail storm will leave marks that are not area specific. The shingle will have some type of damage if the hail impacted was of significant size. If not properly repaired it will eventually start to leak over time.

Roof systems need to be inspected carefully. There are many sections that may need special attention. ie… chimneys and their protrusion through the roof. The physical structure of the chimney and whether or not it is raised at the proper height. As well as, if its properly capped.

The roof in this photo is leaking into the room below. Upon futher inspection the asphalt shingles on this roof have begun to cup, loose granules, and in some spots the matting is visible. Their is gaps along the flashing’s and fascia boards that have rot,where they meet the second story exterior wall.

The artical on Mastering Roof Inspections: Asphalt Composition Shingles, Part 55 gave a wealth of knowledge on everything from shingle deterioration to shingle fastening. This will help inform a inspector on learning what to look for when doing a roof inspection. this artical will help determine the finding and how it will be stated properly in a roof report.

When inspecting a asphalt roof, it is important to remember that with hail damage cracks start from the bottom and permeates towards the top. Because of that, the slightest crack on top could mean a much larger crack underneath the surface with damage not only to the mat but also deeper as well.
This is a great and very interesting course
