I am studying to be a home inspector (Thomson Education Direct). I like the course and have learned alot so far. The form used in the course is the ITA form. I find it cumbersome and confusing. I know that there are different forms out there. What are some of the good ones that are being used?

Hi Bill,
One Idea is to visit professionalequipment.com
they have several different reports. I use the building analysis report
and my clients seem to like it. Don't worry about the computer
generated reporting at this time, some inspectors like it but it certainly
is not necessary. Good luck!

I use a computer generated report and believe it is the way to go in the long run, but in the interim just starting it is not a requirement. The one item that I have found to be the greatest thing so far is the digital camera. The camera has replaced my note pad and is great for reviewing if any questions arise, cheap insurance policy.

I have to agree with Michael, it is much harder to argue with a picture. The on site reports do have a learning curve for the novice so you may want to use it for a while if you decide before actually performing an inspection with it. You could do your own house, the neighbors, friends or family until you are used to the report. I have been hearing recently that many are more customizable than they used to be.
There have been other posts here on the BB which discusses the in's and out's of the different software that is available. Try typing in the software in the search engine.

Bill, like Joe said go look at the threads about software, but the one I use www.homeinspectorsoftware.com has a very nice blank report that you can download and use for a guide on site. However it is about 36 pages. I usually take 5 of them with me on the inspection so I can write down types/serial #'s etc.

Bill,
I've sent for and reviewed a lot of report formats( as you should too) and have settled on the one offered by HomeTech Information Systems for it's ease of use and straight forward approach to the inspection. It provides carbonless copies and enables you to provide an immediate and complete report at the end of your inspection .You retain a copy for your records and provide the client with an original and a copy for their purposes. As for pictures , they can be invaluable but digital pict's can be altered and as such are of dubious legal value. If legal use is a concern , stick to good quality disposable cameras and use forground signage to number and state the location / what you are looking at , of each picture ( the numbers can relate to a site map). Best Regards , George
