Is this a double-tapped Square D circuit breaker?
Yes, it looks to be double tapped. Those particular breakers don’t appear to be designed for 2 wires, altough the breakers above it are.
Here’s another thread on the issue. Double-tapped Square D - Specific Inspection Topics / Electrical Inspections - InterNACHI®️ Forum
Agree, if you look at the face of the breakers, you can see two wires drawn on the upper breakers and one one wire on the lower breakers.
You also need to wonder what could these two circuits on one breaker actually be feeding.
And you can see the extra wire space width and gull wing hold down on the upper ocpd similar to this:
Yes double tapped, breaker listed for use with one conductor (as printed on the breaker).
Here is an example from recent inspection of breaker listed for 2 conductors.
I see water heater and range. That’s some good hack work.
Thanks for the clarification.
Thanks for the reminder.
Gull wing, that’s a great name for that component.
I concur, Kevin. That does not appear to be a SQUARE-D double pole OCPD assimilated with being capable to accept (2) conductors at the terminal.
Here is what the terminal would look like. I honestly forget the series.
Square D and Cutler-Hammer are the only 2 manufactures of OCPD capable of handling 2 circuit conductors. I will try to find the series identification marking.
Related:
Since most 2-pole circuit breakers are used to supplying a single load there isn’t much reason for it to accept more than one conductor per terminal.
I never assimilated it in those terms. I assimilated double pole OCP for powering and protecting over current in large appliances, ie; conditioners, water heaters, and dryers.
I considered the reason for (2 circuit cables terminating at one terminal point) was for extending that lighting branch circuit, to cover more area for outlets or receptacles.
Thoughts?
That’s one circuit, not two.
Not that more ammunition is needed but what gauge are those wires? 10 at best? So 30A wiring… on a 50A breaker?
Range and WH? I guess one can’t cook and bathe simultaneously
Ah, Uncle Bubba was at it again, he knows everything about “lectric” work. When you see things like this, keep looking. You will fine more issues.
Seriously Adam, go to one of the big box stores and study the brands of different manufacturers breakers. Take pictures etc. for your reference. It is easier to see printing on the new breakers so you know where to look on old breakers in the panel.
Good Luck!
