If you are interested, or have an apprentice or acquaintance in the area, please visit www.inspectarisk.com. These "inspections" are very simple and compensate between $15 and $75 dollars. Message me for further info or contact me at tmaloney@inspectarisk.com.

I signed up to perform some of your inspections and received three assignements right away. The problem is that when I figured in my drive time, my time contacting people to confirm the inspection, my time emailing reports in, that I would not even be able to make minimum wage. No mileage allowance for what would have been about 80 - 90 mile of driving. Why would anyone want to sign up for such poor pay. I could make more money at McDonalds.

I understand Tom, I have heard this type of comment before. The answer I give is that you are a contracted inspector. This means that if the orders are too far, send them back. That’s all. It will not reflect negatively on you at all. We do this only with orders that are not in your zip code coverage area. Instead of returning them as unable to complete, maybe you were heading that way this week and they might fit. If I never assigned them I would never know.
To answer your question, you can return any orders that don't fit with your schedule. I wish you had contacted me about this before so I could have addressed it. At least now the question and reply is available for everyone.

I've yet to hear anything good about these type of inspections, whether they are close to home or 50 miles away.
Can anyone on this board (besides Tim) tell me anything positive about these inspections?
Only thing I can think of is experience.... but thats about

Mr. Campbell,
That is a very useful site for servicing the consumer. We service insurance companies.
I guess I should have given a better description for this post. This is a opportunity that can be taken advantage of if you like. Unfortunately it seems that whenever I post this information on NACHI a debate develops. If this type of supplementary work is not for you, its not for you. I will not argue that. However I think this could be useful for "green" inspectors to generate some initial revenue, get their sign on the road and around town, and to start interacting with the public as an inspector. For established inspection companies, this type of work would be good for an apprentice perhaps. I understand that NACHI members are home inspectors when in fact I am attempting to supply underwriting inspections.
Again, these post are meant to supply information on potential opportunities. If its not for you, then its not for you.
I was hesitant for the last two years to post on NACHI fearing that the senior/veteran inspectors would respond negatively. After receiving a warm email from several of the NACHI officers, I re-evaluated my thoughts on posting here. I know established home inspectors will not attempt these for the fee that is paid. However, we have several NACHI members in our field force. I am not looking to debate the feasibility of this type of work, only to make the opportunity available to those that might be interested.

I faxed my information to you a little while ago, please let me know if there is anything in my area. I’m new to HI but lots of experiece in related areas, I appreciate the opportunity to suppliment my limited income at this time of the year.
Most posters get beat up pretty good on these boards, don’t take it personally, the vets are just looking out for us new guys.

I just can’t see how it is worth it, even for a new inspector like myself. I was given 3 assignements that paid $10.00 each for a total of $30.00. I was going to drive 80 - 90 miles (1 & 1/2 hour conservatively), no mileage. Not sure how long it would actually take to perform one of these. I had to spend time contancting the owner the night before, and time on the computer sending in the report. I am serious when I say, I couldn’t make minimun wage on it. So how is it suppose to benefit me? I would seriously consider it, if it paid anything reasonable at all. I’m in a growing area, and the service is needed I am sure, but I need a paycheck. I’m not trying to criticize you or your company, but the figures did not add up…Tom

I understand completely Tom. The best part of contract work is you can say no. Its not like employment where you risk losing your job. Our position here at IAR has always been that if its too far for you, send it back. This would certainly not reflect negatively on you. I apologize for your experience. Perhaps I will make the above statement more prevalent on our web page. I appreciate your constructive criticism.

Tom,
I think Tim has spelled this out as best he can. If it is for you, do it. If it is not for you, don't do it.
All he is doing is providing the opportunity for new guys to get out and do some sort of inspection, and for those who want some extra work, and maybe some beer money. Quantities of Budweiser do get expensive you know!

I see this as a great opportunity for the new guys REGARDLESS of the minimal pay. If you already have something scheduled for the day, of course you would pass on these assignments. But the fact is that the newer guys AREN'T THAT BUSY.
These are great opportunities to LEARN. . .
Learn how to deal with clients, to write reports (or portions of reports) and most importantly, TO LEARN HOW TO INSPECT.
How many inspections did we do for FREE when starting out? For friends, for family etc.
Take the twenty bucks or don't. But there's no need to beat on Tim. Unless of course he's really ugly or something

Hi to all
I have to agree with Jeff, when Tim started posting on this board he did so with both Nick's and my encouragement. we have enough newer inspectors around here who are much better of doing minimal insurance inspections than not, at least they are looking at property not the TV.
please give the guy a break.
