A full size hot tub can weigh about 6000 lbs.
This deck was unmodified to handle the additional weight and the beam should have been notched into the posts as well, even without the hot tub.
And yes I recommended an SE take a look.

Is that the disconnect underneath the deck?
Sounds like a physics problem to me. Given a hot tub is x feet above the ground, what is the velocity of the hot tub when hits the ground.
Lets hope it remains a theoretical physics problem and that it doesn’t become an physics experiment!
Correct
Oh boy, I wouldn’t walk under that setup.
That would be approximately 32 feet second squared adjusted for the short delay in acceleration caused by the remnants of the deck trying to resist the downforce before they totally give way.
But don’t forget… the bubbles provide lift, so all the weight is negated.
You forgot the 2 - 4 fat people in it.
Luckily they don’t have anything screwed to the bottom of the joist that could possibly add a few hundred more pounds…oops, never mind.
Yeah, anything else they could add to stress out that deck?!
I hope I get to find out what the SE recommends.
I would recommend they take the hot tub back where they bought it and tell the store owner they were too stupid to own it.
Love it so true thanks for the chuckle .
