Licensing - Love it/Hate it

And self regulation solves the problem? Self regulation is only as good as the intent of the those administering the self regulating body. In Ontario self regulation does not work because it it s system set up to report to itself.

Patrick - Is this Molly an old girlfriend or what???

Raymond -

Solving what exact problem. Has drivers licenses solved or eliminated bad drivers? Has a medical license solved the medical problem? How about has a license for Realtors solved the real estate agent problems?

Drivers licences have nothing to do with removing or keeping bad drivers off the road, any more than self regulation works at keeping bad inspectors from inspecting. What licencing does do if done correctly removes the ability of self serving special interests from overseeing themselves and their ability to trample on my rights and others who may find themselves at odds with the BOD of self regulating bodies. They are not open to scrutiny and the ones I know of in my area are anything but open, fair, honest, nor can they assure the members that they can and will follow the bylaws they are to uphold. The buck certainly doesn’t stop with them. Again licencing would remove that question about who is overseeing whom.

Those are my reasons. Of course I appreciate some self regulating bodies may be good at what they do, but again in my area and being a member for 16 years has been anything but open, honest and fair, but rather a closed door mentality and no accountability and too many financial misfeasance concerns.

Cheers,

Agreeing to have the State regulate you, in order to protect you from “special interests”, is like hiring a pedophile to babysit your child in order to protect him from “strangers”.

Jim

I don’t see you offering solutions. Your comment has no relevance because the solution is to rid the industry of self serving interests and to remove their ability to self serve their own interests on the qt without any form of accountability.

Licensing solved one issue which was someone practicing HI with out one. He had been doing it for almost five years however so it did take a while. Other than that I don’t feel it has solved much here in Illinois!

Why is that those who come peddling bad legislation demand others must provide better solutions? We have a Governor here in Florida hell bent on quick-fixing things that will be with us long after this Governor is a faint memory.

Using governmental force to impose a vision on others is intellectual sloth and typically results in unintended consequences

Are there home inspectors and lay people on the body overseeing licencing/governance of the inspectors?

Joesph,

What is the solution, all I am reading is intellectual mombo jumbo? All I hear is how bad licencing is, but the poll suggests otherwise.

My issues up here in Canada are totally different from the reasons I hear state side. If an association cannot guarantee it members full enjoyment of its rights who can be assured the consumer is getting a fair hearing from home inspectors overseeing themselves? Its no different then builders regulating themselves and screwing the consumer.

Yeah, I guess the fundamental difference is that here in America we ain’t run by polls.

Looks like the poll is disproving many of the nay sayers. Me thinks thats an indication its not as bad as the big bad Wolf its being portrayed as.

To the contrary…the poll supports the nay sayers.

In unlicensed states, according to this poll, two thirds of the home inspectors prefer to keep it that way.

It also reflects, sadly, that one third of home inspectors in licensed states are not happy with their law.

The National Assoc of Realtors, in 1995, established an agenda to push a home inspector licensing bill in all of the states. Understandably, ASHI (already a partner through their branding campaign) supports these efforts — albeit clandestinely, since so many of their members oppose it.

I am having breakfast this morning with a Missouri congressman who is interested in writing a bill protecting consumers from the conflict of interest that is posed when commissioned salesmen of real estate are involved in any manner with the home inspection process. He has other congressmen in the state interested in the same thing.

As to licensing, he would prefer to see someone other than the NAR and MAR pushing it for the conflict of interest is obvious and - in his opinion - makes licensing of home inspectors appear as little more than a means of control by those wanting to sell the house over those who are supposed to be objective.

He is also versed and enthusiastic about the lack of demonstrated need, when our state has more complaints filed with the AG and BBB against unlicensed florists than home inspectors (5 complaints in the last three years). The same agencies have had several thousand filed against real estate salesmen, home builders, and contractors. Builders and contractors have no state license ---- and the fact that real estate salesmen do, does not keep the consumer complaints even close to the same negligible level as ours.

Licensing solves nothing.

The poll does not say anything of the like, it says:
*** I work in a licensed/regulated state, and I like the law. -52%

*I do not live in a licensed/regulated state, and I prefer a HI law for my state. -20%

LOL

Ray, you need to go back to second grade.

The percentage next to the answer is simply the percentage of those answering the poll. That is why all four numbers add up to 100%. If you were correct, all four numbers whould add up to 200%.

Look at it again.

James

It still states 42%. and 16%.

Realtors overseeing any legislation for licencing of home inspectors is a no-no.

Actually Dan, I thought she was one of your old girlfriends from Wichita by the way the last email sent to you was so full of love and support for your efforts in KS in regards to legislation…
