Low service over a roof

It’s just as easy to measure the slope from an exposed attic. Simply get yourself a 12 inch level or if you can’t get a level exactly 12 inches long, mark a level at 12", hold it perfectly level and measure from the rafter surface to your 12" mark, this will give you the rise.

Pretty simple…

or you can do the same from the roof side if there isn’t attic access

Absolutely. I was just trying to keep everyone safe.

As a mater of fact, if you can get your measuring tools next to the rake, you’d be good to go.

this method would be very tough on the Hips

Great overhead clearance graphic David. Perfectly clear on what’s what.

Thanks all.

I have always just used flat, low, medium and high to describe pitch.
I did not realize 4/12 was that low of a pitch.

I don’t want to get too “technically exhaustive”!!!

A note for Canadian inspectors - Service wires may NOT cross a roof at ANY height except at the eaves or gable ends. It seems people spend a lot of time on their roofs up here, shovelling snow. I did that once or twice myself.

Here’s to the CANADIANS…

Here’s to you Canadians…

That’s all fine and good David…until some idiot decides to build a carport on the side of the house with the end result of having the service actually sitting on the peak. Saw that on a house once. Another one was when the homeowner upgraded to 100 amp, but kept the fuse box and didn’t change the service stack. Result was wires abrading themselves against the shingles.
In both cases, I advised contact with Hydro One and in both cases, Hydro One said it was not their responsibility.

Yup, you’ll probably run into again more than once. I see SE cables over roof tops quite often. Usually after an addition has been added. I can’t believe the damn lazy municipal inspectors aren’t catching these on their walk-through (if they are even walking through).

Here’s one of my most recent SE cables that I red flagged…

Dave, I thought that was a cable to hook up your safety harnass.

I guess this would be quite electrifying, like the past couple of Days have been.

Marcel

Amazing what people will do. Hopefully no one gets hurt and people like us seem to help that a little.

I know what you mean, Marcel.

I’ll stay away from that particular (electrifying) topic.

What is the required distance over a garage? I knew but I just forgot. :—)

3 ft.

See David’s diagram in post # 21 of this thread.

Thank you.

Yup. A roof is a roof.

Hey David is that your HI vehicle in the background (Mercedes SUV)?

That’s why I carry a foldable ladder…
