David,

Most times lead pipe can be identified by the characteristic bulging or tulip bulb shaped joint.

Both lead and galvinized steel pipes are gray in color. To determine if the serviceline is lead, use a screwdriver to make a slight scratch. Lead is soft and will scratch very easily and it will be shiny, where galvanized is harder to scratch and the scratch line will be duller.

Sorry but can't really tell from the picture, but hope this helps somewhat.

not only that, but if i’m not mistaken lead is so soft the there wasn’t threaded fitting for it. too soft and it would mush the threads on both sides. if you see threaded fittings, it’s probably not lead. the “tulips” are realy hard to miss. icon_cool.gif

David,

A. Dan Leleika gave some great advice.

It would be nice to see a pic of the pipe connection under the water meter.

There was no visible pipe under the meter other than the visible connector.
I know about the chararistics of lead, but I thought this type of connector below the meter would indicate the supply pipe that I couldnt see.
