While there is no life left in his blog, the Jim Morrison that posts here can still fog a mirror.

The dead Jim Morrison in his short life made a name for himself that may outlive his generation. The Jim Morrison who gifts us with his turds of wisdom, though not quite dead, obviously has no life.

Every moment of success enjoyed by NACHI and its membership sends a sharp pain through his bowels that finds its way to his keyboard and, ultimately, to us.

Some lanes are always under construction. Some lanes are suffering traffic jams (like these free search engine submission reports currently). Some lanes have car wrecks on them, being cleared. Some lanes are being paved. Others are having their guard rails painted. Some lanes are suffering from terrorist attacks ![icon_rolleyes.gif](upload://iqxt7ABYC2TEBomNkCmZARIrQr6.gif) . Some are closed while we construct more pilasters for future lanes.

This is natural when you have a 1,000 lane bridge... especially when you are adding new lanes every day to keep up with traffic volume increases every day.

Nick,
So, Nick, have you considered adding Traffic Cop to your long resume?

Nick, That is all fine and good (and I'm being generous here), but what professionals do is advise people of the "traffic jam", and let them know there will be a delay and how long that delay will be. This did not happen until after the promised timeline had come and gone for many who signed up for this "free" service. A professional would advise you of the problem BEFORE it was promised.

I prefer to think of this as a membership benefit. It's something you get for your $289.00. Calling it "free" seems to give some people the notion that if we are not paying for it, we have no right to complain if we don't get first class service. I have to assume that NACHI is paying Roberta to do this...thus we ARE paying for this service. I give people the same level of service regardless of how much they are paying and I expect the same of others.

Keep in mind that the reason people expected it to be done 1 week after signing up was because the sign up web page said so. The response to inquiries (at least to mine) was inadequate and unprofessional.

In my world when one cannot meet a promised deadline an advance apology is in order and a new promise is made. In this case there was no apology and the response fell short of really making a new promise.

Quote:
"These requests are being processed as time permits. I expect we will be all caught up by the end of next week."

Since tomorrow marks the end of the work week referred to, I request that you tell Roberta that any backlogged members need to be contacted now if she will not be able to complete their submissions this week.

I took care of it. I instructed Roberta to forget about the submission reports for now and concentrate on the submissions only.

It is a difficult thing to announce any new lane opening on this site as everyone heads there all at once.

Happens every time.

With that knowledge in hand it was just nuts to have said these would be done in one week. What are ya ... CRAZY?

Yes, David, your request is in the queue, as are several hundred other SEO requests.

You seem to be willing to talk quite a bit on how the process should operate, when I don't believe you actually know what these search engine requests entail. Therefore, I thought it would be helpful for you, or perhaps for other NACHI members, if I clarified this for you.

Each SEO submission request takes 3-4 hours to fulfill, from verifying the NACHI membership status, to reviewing the web site for search engine compatibility, spidering each site for every linked page, checking the Google PageRank, personalizing search engine recommendations, inputting keywords and site descriptions, selecting the appropriate engines to submit to, submitting each and every page of the web site (not just the base URL) to the search engines, reviewing the SEO submission report, saving the report to disk, uploading the report to a public web server, and finally, notifying the member that their report is completed and online.

Now, I could have chosen to do a half-assed version of these submissions by simply submitting each base URL to a dozen engines, but instead I chose to provide the same level of service to NACHI members that I normally charge clients $300 and up for. It's unfortunate that I have a limited number of hours in the week that I can spend on this type of service, however, I do need to balance this against other contracting work for which I am being paid for.

Nonetheless, I'd like to apologize to the group for the fact that it's taken longer to fulfill the backlogged requests, but they are getting fulfilled, slowly but surely, in the hours I have available for this type of work. Taking time out of my week to notify several hundred inspectors that their reports are being delayed would simply further delay actual work being don, however I have made corrections to the confirmation page of the site to correct the initial estimate that SEO requests would be fulfilled within the original 1 week timeframe estimated.

That said, I neither give preference to, nor penalize, the squeaky wheel. All SEO and DNS requests are being processed in the order received - even those requests which have come from members like yourself, who are so ready to condemn me in a public forum rather than contacting me personally to find out what is going on, or better yet, considering waiting patiently for a service which they are getting FOR FREE. I'd like to thank you for that - it's members like you that make my job worthwhile, and make me want to continue offering free services to NACHI members as a whole. While I'd be happy to put such requests on the bottom of my list, I can only be fair and operate on a FIFO basis.

Of course, my next proposed project, which Nick has already announced in the boards, was supposed to be offering free secure report hosting and online delivery (an alternative to paid services like ReportHost). At this point, I have to say that given this thread I'm reluctant to launch even a beta of this free service until I am confident that it will be well received rather than being trashed in the forums.

BTW, all NACHI members are welcome to contact me via email if they are concerned about the status of any project request, I can be reached either via the boards or directly by emailing me at rainmaker@yalia.com. I try to respond to all critical emails within 24 hours, even on the weekends. Hell, I'm even on this forum at 1:15 am on my birthday trying to put out yet another "fire" - it's kind of sad that I don't appear to have anything better to do than this...

My 2 cents...

Many Happy Returns of the day, Of course I am hoping they are a little less stressful than this one is or has been. I have a ton of stuff for you to do but I realize you are backed up and will wait for a while before getting hold of you.

You have been nothing but helpful to me and I for one appreciate your efforts on our behalf. I guess if you give away a product or service people don’t see the value.

Have a better day girl

Hello Roberta,

Happy B-Day. ![icon_biggrin.gif](upload://iKNGSw3qcRIEmXySa8gItY6Gczg.gif)

Just to let you and everyone else know I received my report this morning. I almost deleted it as there was no name in the senders block.
I would like to thank you very much for the time and the effort you have placed in this project and to ask your forgiveness of our impatientness.
You know how us men can be in wanting our toy's and information NOW and waiting is not an option.

The information you provided is great and I'll be checking it out further as time will permit as I would like to move my Google PR from 2 to #1.

Thanks again for your efforts and assistance.

You have provided a wonderful FREE service, for me anyway, and I know others at NACHI must have received theirs and I hope they will post a thank you reply also.

Roberta,

Welcome to the message board where the motto is "Condemn first, obtain facts later". While our posters represent a very small fraction of NACHI members, you and those who appreciate your tremendous service to us are in the overwhelming majority. Thanks for all you do.

Jim

Thank you to everyone who wished me a happy b-day. Yes, I had a lovely day - worked a bit in the morning, but headed down to Pearl Street in the afternoon for tapas at the Med and a free outdoor concert in the center of town.

BTW Bob - no pouting - I waiting at the office that Friday for 45 minutes but no one called or showed up. Guess it's just as you said in Bowmanville - Nick is the only real "draw" here ;-p

P.S. Joe, I’m going to resend your report this morning with a different header string. Let me know if it identifies me better. I also included some recommendations specifically for your web site that will help you get where yoiu want to go on Google - the biggest things you can do is to dump the frames and bulk up your link exchanges. I’m happy to chat with you about this off the board, if you want more information.

Thanks,

Roberta

Roberta,

I'm well aware of what is involved in SEO submissions. That is one of the reasons why I was pleased when it was announced that this was being provided as a benefit to members, and the idea that it would be done in a week was an offer that was mighty hard to pass up.

Your suggestion that perhaps the best course of action a member could take, when weeks have passed without a peep out of you, is to simply wait patiently for a service we are "getting FOR FREE", is ludicrous.

You seem to look at the idea of notifying people that you will not be able to keep your promise, as something that "would simply further delay actual work". This simply defies all logic. You know, as well as the rest of us, that it is as easy to contact "several hundred inspectors" as it is to contact one.

I'm sorry that you feel the need to portray yourself as some sort of victim here. Your suggestion that launching your next ""free service" might be dependant on whether or not it will be "trashed in the forums" is way over-dramatic, and appears to be a subtle attempt (or perhaps not so subtle) to squash any public complaints about your level of service, for fear that you might not offer additional services to members.

There is something I hope you will give some thought to. This thread started because people were expecting a report in 1 week and heard nothing for weeks. Most everyone here understands that delays happen. It's not likely that you would have heard a peep from anyone had an email gone out notifying members of the bottleneck.

The idea that you poo-pooed this common courtesy as just another delay in "actual work" shows me that you just don't get it. Heck, I bet if you gave the list to Nick or anyone in the office, someone would have found the time to contact the members. Where there is a will there is a way.

It is a shame that you felt the need to be on this forum, at 1:15 am, on your birthday (BTW Happy Birthday), to put out "yet another "fire" ". It's unfortunate that you didn't notice that the fire had already gone out before you got here.

I had hoped that you would have recognized how the "fire" started, simply taken responsibility for it, cleaned it up, and moved on. Everybody makes mistakes, but I'm still not sure you recognize yours.

I'm betting that you would never let a deadline pass and not contact a paying customer, letting them know it would not be done. Not doing that here just doesn't jive with your claim that you "chose to provide the same level of service". Communication is an important part of any service, and it was missing here.

I'm betting that "several hundred" other members could easily have been notified in a fraction of the time it took for you to post your message, trying to elevate yourself and berating me as a so called "squeaky wheel".

Just the same, I don't hold any ill will against you, and I'm sure that the work you do is good. If it wasn't good I think it would be plastered all over these forums. I just hope you consider making communication a priority in the future rather than thinking of it as a waste of time. It's the little things like that separate the average from the extraordinary. Heck, you might even want to consider an "Ask Roberta" forum in the members only section.
