New Inspector In Saskatchewan Canada

Hey Everyone!

I am currently at the midway point of my InterNACHI Home Inspector course! i am a journeyperson electrician who has worked on the road away from home for the past 7 years and looking to start my own inspecting company in my home town so i can be home and be my own boss and this has been something i have been talking about doing for a couple years and finally pulled the trigger this year.

In Saskatchewan you do not need an Inspectors license to be a home inspector in the province, i am curious if anyone else from Saskatchewan could answer my question if i need to complete the InterNACHI Course before i can start the process of starting a company?

Morning, Justin. Hope to find you well and in good spirits today.

Having read your post several times I have some things to say.

I am going to start at the bottom of your post. “my question if i need to complete the InterNACHI Course before i can start the process of starting a company?”
This is telling. Poor choice to put your feet on the ground as a registered business with no credentials.
“Hello Mister or Misses so and so.” “You looking to have your prospective home inspected.” “Credentials?” “I am non certified home inspector.” “Nope, no errors and omissions or liability insurance.” “No one will insure me. Lack of credentials and experience.” “Oh. You wish to know how long I have been inspecting real-estate.” “My years of experience?” “None.” “I was a journeyman electrician for 7 years and decided to become a home inspection business.”
“Hello, hello?” “You still there???”

Complete the InterNACHI Course. Become a CPI. Then come asking questions. No short cuts here.

I disagree.

He can start the company and get all the paperwork and such done. He just can’t do any business until he’s got his certs, insurance and whatnot(tools, vehicle, signs, advertising, etc.) completed.

Seems to me like he’s asking if he can get the business minutia out of the way so he can hit the ground running when he’s ready.

Also, he could start the business just to pay the $500 annual Internachi dues so he can write it off.

Thank you for thanking the time to parse out what the OP was asking unlike myself, Mark. Appears I jumped the gun so to speak.
Please excuse me, Justin. I only wish you the best chances of survival in the home inspection industry.

Home inspection business survival. Never the less. I read, industry experts estimate that well over half of new inspectors who enter the profession fail to establish a sustainable business model and quit the industry within the first few years.
That can add up to a lot of time any money.

Thanks again, Mark.

Hey Robert and Mark,

Thanks for taking the time to respond back I appreciate the feedback!

Mark, that is my intentions of starting the process of creating a business in Saskatchewan, also I did mention that Saskatchewan is the only Province in Canada you do not require a home inspector license to be a certified home inspector in the Province so that’s why I was wondering if I can start the process before I have completed the InterNACHI course even though I do not plan on performing inspections till i am completely trained..

Robert, I am currently working a 7X7 shift and work on my training in the evenings and my days off, I appreciate the stats and the knowledge of businesses who start and fail and that’s why I am taking the course through InterNACHI getting the proper training so I can deliver a great product for my customers. I am not planning on doing any inspections until I have completed my training as I still have a lot to learn and understand about this career.

Looking forward to continue my training and getting to understand this profession and once again thank you for your time!

I hate reading between the lines. I hope I am making a mistake again.
Actually, Justin, there are only “2 provinces” in Canada where licensing regulations exist. British Columba and Alberta.
I put a stop to regulations in my province of Quebec where as another InterNACHI member, InterNACHI Quebec founder Gilles Laurine was all for it.
Called me threating litigation, THE FIRST TIME, if I did not agree, as he teamed up with the president of another Quebec home inspector group he eventually stabbed in the back, The AIBQ. Long drawn out story. I have lots to say on the subject and name at hand… Someone will likely tell him about this thread and he may come wondering in even though he HATES using the message board and told others, “Do not post here!” Imagine that from a so called leader?

Gilles and I have been at loggerheads for the associations direction and how provincial legislation ever sense I should up on the radar and we meet in person.
Too bad. So sad. He is a good inspector. As for governance, all the qualities of an authoritarian leader wearing too many hats.

I watched it unfold along with many older Canadian home inspectors.
The instigator of the legislation, Mike Holmes the builder, well-known home renovation expert and television personality, unlicensed general contractor, and Elaine Yong CBC journalist if I an not mistaken.
Those 2 started the craze about watching out for unlicensed home inspectors I feel. The vessel, a uncertified home inspector British Columbia called Imre Toth. Imre was ordered to pay $192,000 in compensation to a North Vancouver couple for failing to properly inspect their home

Any-who. Only 2 provinces where legislation has passed requiring home inspectors to be regulated. Even in Ontario, the second shoe did not drop after 5 years of intense round table discussions with all effected parties.

Give me a few moments and I will add a link to the case Salgado v. Toth, 2009 BCSC 1515 (CanLII)
