New User to InterNACH

Hey Everyone,

Just wanted to pop on here and say hey and that I’m not seeing a lot of female users so here’s to my attempt at jumping in this game. Looking forward to learning all there is and getting out of the legal field soon!!

Welcome!
We actually have many women inspectors, but most only post once or twice, and rarely come back. Can only assume they feel intimidated with the “Male Contractor” feel, but that is quickly changing given the evolution of today’s Society.
Hang in there, as we have a handful of women that regularly post, but again not as often as the men do.
Tell us about yourself (generally) and your experience with the construction industry (if any). This will help break the ice with other inspectors.
It also helps to post your basic Location, Business name, and Website in the Signature area to help us reply to any queries you may have, as many/most issues may be Regional/Local influenced.
Good luck.

Thank you for the warm welcome!!!

I am currently a Paralegal for Real Estate and Commercial Law, so I definitely have some experience in the construction field. My father has also been a carpenter my entire life and has built houses from the ground up and I have helped so I do know a thing or two in the field.

I am looking to move my career to be even more financially successful than I am for not only myself but my daughters. I am located in Michigan so will be working here, but definitely want to move in the near future I hate the winters.

Well, there is no licensing here in MI. But I recommend learning as much as you can even though you could open tomorrow and start inspecting. Scary, huh?

Plus, where you move may have licensing.

Start running through the program here for your CPI and that’ll get you started.

Ask here if you need assistance.

Welcome and good luck!

I did not know that. Thank you so much for the info. that is very helpful. I’m working this with my normal job and I’ve pretty much finished a course in a little over a week so I’m definitely working it as much as I can. I want to know everything possible.

Do you do inspections in MI? If so, what would you recommend my first steps be as far as getting into the business other than learning, of course.

Welcome to the assocation, Lori!
Best of luck with your endeavors.

I’m retired. Where are you located?

Once you get your CPI qualification through InterNACHI here, you could find a mentor. That is very beneficial in getting you and your confidence up and running.

Lori, you may want to contact some CMIs or CPIs within 40 to 50 miles, or closer, to your area and communicate with them. Maybe one, or more, will help you. Some inspectors feel as though they are training their competition by ride-alongs or mentoring or hiring and some are into it just for the $.

You don’t see as many women in this biz, mostly because home inspection is associated with construction which is traditionally a male dominated occupation. But there are women home inspectors who do great. There is no reason that you cannot become a great and successful inspector.

Don’t know any details of how active this Women’s Chapter is, but it should at least give you some contacts with other women inspectors. Officer Lisa Endza is a longtime Internachi Staff member, and would be a great resource for information.

Welcome Lori,
Here are some links to lots of information that will help you get started.
Best advice is to study every day and take as many courses as possible get your CPI, then develop your business plan and you obviously have access to some legal help to get your agreements in order.
Study hard on the areas that may be unfamiliar to you. Marketing yourself and getting your feet wet are difficult for newer inspectors.

Best of luck and come back to the MB often as you can learn a lot here as well

I am in the downriver area currently.

There are some larger inspection companies down there that may hire once you get your CPI.

Just a thought. It is one way to gather experience for use then and later.
