On The Job Training

This is my first forum so I am not sure how this works.

I recently just completed my courses online here at Internachi. I am in the military and plan to get out and become a home inspector in Hampton Roads VA. However, in the state of VA I have to do 25 home inspections before I can test. The problem is I am not sure how to find someone who will let me go around with them or sign off on my inspections without signing a one year non-compete clause. How do I work with this?

Interesting that you have not received a single response to a question I believe would be a very common question from someone just beginning in the industry. Perhaps there is no getting around a non-compete clause.

Where’s @lkage

There is a mentor section on the InterNACHI site. Sorry, I don’t have the exact link. You might be able to find someone in VA willing to help. Also, as Larry Kage always says, try reaching out to inspectors a little outside your eventual work area. Then maybe you won’t be affected by a non-compete.

Mi’Guel, contact some CMIs or CPIs within 40 to 50 miles, or closer, to your area and communicate with them. Maybe one, or more, will help you. Some inspectors feel as though they are training their competition by ride-alongs or mentoring or hiring.

Here is the link for CMIs: Find a Certified Master Inspector®

Also, you may want to take advantage of your Education Team at education@internachi.org for specific questions e.g. https://www.nachi.org/become-home-inspector.htm and https://www.nachi.org/masterclass.htm .

And there is the https://www.nachi.org/howto.htm for many other things. And the InterNACHI online education page: How do I navigate the InterNACHI online education page? | InterNACHI FAQ

P.S. Welcome to our forum. Enjoy!
