Online continuing education

It appears as though there are many items on the NACHI.org plate right now. There are changes in the message board, the exam is constantly being updated, we are reviewing ethics, promotional ideas are in the works and we are growing. Growing can cause some problems. Right now we (at least the leadership, Nick) has too much on the plate. Too many loose ends that need to be tied. I will pick the following subject and recommend we focus on that item until completed before we take on any more work: ONLINE CONTINUING EDUCATION. Where do we stand with this subject and what is the expected due date to complete this project? Who is working on it? Are we outsourcing? Do we need any help? I am concerned because in my state, there needs to be a continuing education program to be compliant with the law. Besides that, it is a great idea and is very helpful. I assisted in getting Certainteed to add us to their website to earn CEUs (their site is not updated Yet). Thanks for doing the legwork Nick.

We need to focus on one item at a time and not divert so we can keep from having so many “loose ends”. I appreciate the effort to continually look for more opportunities for our members, but we need to focus on all of the unfinished items one at a time until they are completed. I am willing to help out where/when I can on any of the open ends. Let me know what we need to do in order to get these taken care of. Thanks!

Hi Jeff,

very very good post. I to have noticed that some of our projects seem to have gone very quiet, which is not surprising given the rate at which we are growing and the problems that Nick & others must have in keeping a handle on things.

With reference to the on-line education situation this is one area that I would be very happy to help out with, as I teach a home inspection course at Northern Essex Community College, in Massachusetts I do not know who is designing our on-line course but we really could do with getting that up to speed ( do we have an educational committee )

Anyway I am happy to do any thing to help out the association, Nick or anyone else get in touch if you need help with any project that helps our membership.

At some point a staff will need to be hired to take care of the details. I tried to to manage our states home inspector association and it became a fulltime job quickly and we only had at that time 45 members.

If your state requires CE hours you need to be sure that they will accept on-line hours. Many states will not accept them. In IL the instructor must be approved (pay a fee) and the course must be approved (pay a fee).

MS, LA, AZ, NJ, NC, VA, MA (I don't know about PA) all require the specific course and instructor to be approved prior to taking the course. I doubt that any of them will take on-line CE hours.

Scott, the state does not approve CEUs, they just state that the national organization you belong to require them. Therefore, whatever NACHI approves is approved. Hope this clarifies this…

Chris & I have made our online course a priority second only to finishing the projects in “promotion” category: brochures, mouse pads, find-an-inspector deals, real estate deal, google.com deal.

We have a new employee (well, actually she worked for NACHI last summer). She starts full time on April 21. She will take over the office, grow and manage the Library, and work promoting us to individual real estate offices.

Membership (although swamped recently) will remain in the good hands of Alicia.

Again...it is interesting to note how well NACHI functions within cyberspace. I have never met (in person) a single committee member. I don't believe any committee member has ever met any other committee member. We are exploring the idea of holding our national convention...online, so that all can participate. Our tech. director Chris (who lives in Mass) and I only work together in person twice a year. Membership Dept. is in another city altogether. Members often work on their own for NACHI from all over the country. Our dedicated server is in New Jersey. I live much of the time in Washington. Not much of a hierarchy here. NACHI is truly member driven and cyberspace operated.

Nick, I would prefer an in person convention. Like you said, it is uncommon for people to get together. We could probably get some vendors to pay to set up stuff there and keep costs down. I would prefer to meet people but also a lot of good discussions will come from there.

The online education won’t be finished until late into this coming summer. Like Nick said, it’s a high priority, but it’s also slow going. I believe there a other topics regarding the upcoming online continuing. education, but I’m happy to answer any other questions people have. Gerry – e-mail me with any ideas you might have. We’ve had some contact with community college instructors, but most of the meetings were regarding NACHI’s Exam. It’d be nice to talk to someone with real experience teaching about home inspections.
