This essay is on XRF (X-ray fluorescence) which is a very accurate and reliable instrumentation-based method for quantitative analysis of chemical elements. The handheld XRF tool could be used as a preliminary method for detecting problem or Chinese drywall to Lead Paint. However this tool or method should not be relied upon as a complete test method. The device will measure levels of Strontium used as a dryer instead of lead paint or is contained in natural gypsum. Strontium is alkali earth element and Strontium sulfide is a stable compound that is insoluble in water requiring interaction with an acid to create hydrogen sulfide gas. Since drywall maintains a neutral-to-alkaline pH, it is difficult to calculate how the acid reaction will occur with the mere presence of humidity in the air. The alkaline pH makes the generation of hydrogen sulfide gas from strontium sulfide even less likely. Corrosive gas by products are the issue with Chinese drywall and it is not entirely clear that Strontium is the cause as drywall with low levels of Strontium have also produced corrosive gas but rather appears as a ride along marker. The presence of elemental sulfur was determined not to be a 100%-reliable indicator of problem drywall also. Seems determination of the cause is not conclusively indicated, I guess we’ll all stay tuned with Building Envelope Science Institute (BESI) for more information but an XRF Tool can provide some initial indication only.
The hot water tank should be checked for suitable drafting. This should reach proper drafting with in 60 seconds of firing. A hole should be drilled in the hood before the flue begins.Ensure you reset the hot water tank temp back to original temp.
Air infiltration comes from many sources during a blower door test. Use a smoke pin at baseboards, trim around fireplaces, windows and trim, any ceiling penetrations such as recessed light, attic hatches and ceiling fans. Also look for exterior defects such as rotted wood and cantilevered windows.

A great tool for an inspector to have during a negative pressure test is an infrared camera. During a blower door test negative pressure is created in the conditioned space. Using an infrared camera will show where cold air is leaking into the house. It will be recommended that these areas be sealed up.
