Definitely keep the structural questions coming. Like you said, approx 1/3 of lawsuits based on structural conditions. Might as well try to make a weak link a stronger link.

It would not be acceptable to use the nominal ceiling joist lap nailing when installed with roof rafters. The ceiling joists are then the rafter ties, and would be nailed the same as the rafter-joist heel connection (per IRC Table R802.5.1.9, Footnote-c as a guide).
