If you can detect a leak in time, you might be able to save not just water but also money on your water bill. Before you call a plumber, the following steps should be able to help you detect a leak around the house:

Turn of all the faucets that might be using water. Appliances like dishwasher and washing machines should also be turned off. Hence, anything and everything related to water, inside or outside should be put off immediately.

The protective cover of the meter box should be removed.

Majority of the meters have a leak indicator. If the triangle is of a different color is spinning inside the meter, then you have a leak. If it is not moving or is moving very slowly, you do not have a leak and hence this is not a plumbing San Jose problem.

There should be main shut-off valve close to the meter, go and shut that off.

Now, turn any one of the faucet inside the house to test. If water flows after a little while and stops in intervals, there is a problem with the valve. If the water has stopped completely then go back and check the hand of the meter.

If the leak indicator is moving, there is a problem between the valve and the meter. If it is not moving, there is a leak somewhere in the house.

After you are done of an inspection, call any one of the plumbers Los Gatos for urgent help.
