Anyone ever seen this scoop thing? It’s right above the cricket on the chimney facade. Its a wood burning, but the flue is metal factory built

That would be my take on it, too.
Are you sure? you would think that the air intake would be at floor level? Just saying, People do strange things.
Without having any information at all as to the fireplace/insert/stove/other, it is as good a determination as anyone can give. Also, how many stories, and how many appliances are being served by this single vent?
Sure would be nice if people asking for help would provide the information needed to make credible determinations!! Just sayin’.
