Hi - hope you guys don’t mind a question from a home owner, but this seems like to best place to get an answer to a wind mitigation inspection question.
I have 3 previous WMI and always received single wrap roof to wall attachment. A couple months ago I had a new one done (insurance company request) with the new Form 1802 and the inspector marked it as Clips.
Reading the definition of single wrap it states: “…wraps over the top of the truss/rafter and is secured with a minimum of two nails on the front side and a minimum of one nail on the back side.”
In my WMI the inspector wrote in the caption to two photos: “Metal connector with one nail on the front side and two nails on the opposing side.” Picture clearly shows strap wrapping over the truss.
Does it really make a difference that the the standard says two nails in the front and one on the back and mine is opposite? Seems like a distinction without a difference to me.
Yes, if the nailing is not as the form defines for single wrap, then it defaults to clip if at least 3 nails are used. There really is not a large difference in discounts between the two.
Dave, there are other factors that come into play here:
What year was your house built?
Per the form you should be getting a clip credit, but as Brad said there is not much difference between a strap and a clip (per the form). It looks like you had and inspector that does not know how to read the form.
Depending on your original plans, and you would have to have them, you may meet the uplift required to get the strap credit. That would take more work than the guy charging $75 is willing to do. All he is going to do is read the form literally and do the minimum required.
If you want to email me the report I would be happy to look at it for you. Also if you have a copy of the previous report so I can compare.
And as others have pointed out, it isn’t much difference in the discount, however, if you like, there are retrofit companies that will add the extra nail for you.
I suspect you home was built in the late 70s or eighties as it was quite common to find them done that way…or no straps at all!
I fill out the form to the best of my ability and based on how I interpret the form since my name is on the line
I try to stay consistent in case there is any trouble ever I can tell the truth as to how I came to my answers therefore likely avoiding malicious fraud.
