Hey, I was just wondering how hard the exam really is. I went to school for inspections and almost everyone I was in class with has failed at least two times. Is there any secret that we are not getting or are they all stupid? I haven’t taken the test yet, but this has me kinda scared!!

You must be referring to the NHIE exam. It is difficult, but with a good overall background in building construction and some studying, you should pass.

If you are talking about the NHIE it is a basic entrance exam, if you can’t pass it maybe you should rethink a career in the Home Inspection profession.

I believe Dawn is talking about the TX exam. Yes, it is difficult. Only about 30% passing rate on first try. The Code Check books are a big help in studying. Also you need to know the formulas for voltage, ampacity, etc…
I practiced by taking the NACHI exam about three times a week, just to get into test taking mode. I think part of the problem is that many people do not know how to take a test.
Where are you taking classes Dawn?
Someone in the class before mine put together a study list. I found it very helpful. If you email me your address I can mail you a copy of it. I only have it in hard copy.

Yes I am talking about the state licensing, not NHIE. Apparently, not every one knows about Texas licensing. Anyways, I went to school in the Alvin area(south of Houston) and enjoyed the classes, but I have heard that they didn’t cover all that we needed. I have about 7 yrs. exp. in the construction business, but so did some of the other people in the class that failed. I would love to get any help that you can offer.I have been taking the NACHI test too and am doing reasonably well, so we will see.

Take all of the code checks and make flash cards for every one of the ?'s. You should come up with between 400 & 500 flash cards with 3 to 4 ?'s on each. Yes, the exam is tricky and some of the ?'s are wordy in a very ridiculous way. You will scratch your head thinking what possible answer are they looking for cause none of em make sense. Study your Laws and Regulations (SOP & Code of Ethics) inside out and backwards. TREC tries very hard to trick you. I know there are only 10 questions on that section but most people either pass or fail by a few. I got a 119 on my second attempt and finally got a 122 on my third attempt. The NACHI exam is about 1/2 as difficult as the TREC Pro. Exam so do not base you results on that. Take my advice and it will save you heartache down the road. Best to you in your studies…

Thank you so much for your study technics Richard! I will definitely try that. I gotta say William, I never thought of it quite that way, but you did make a great point I just wish they would find a better test than the one that they give. I know they are trying to weed out the incompetent people, but they are also missing out on some really good ones too with their system. Thank ya’ll again for your help!!
