Stick framed post and beam?

This is a new one for me. I stood there scratching my head for a bit, trying to figure out this framing technique. Ultimately it’s one of those ‘while this installation may function, it is not correct…’ moments as it’s a small garage with very little weight on the roof structure. Do any of you have experience with this type of post and beam construction?

Update: DOH! I should have chosen better wording (or at least some emojis). it was a humorous attempt on my part. I fell flat on this one. Yes, I am well aware this is wrong!

Nicholas, you may not have many, if any log constructed homes in your area, but I recommend taking the interNACHI course to help when you come across certain construction techniques like this. Although common in construction, the course really helps in looking for all the nuances.

IMO, side post to beam connections are inferior. Beams should be bearing atop the post or in a notch pocket with through bolts and not a fastener subject to withdrawal.

I agree with Brian. Devil is in the details and the connections appear to be the weak link in this case.

And the way the rafters are tapered at the ends weakens the ends.

looks like the 2x on this one is already gone if i’m reading that wood discoloration correctly.

Not to mention the bird’s mouth/level cut bearing on a flat 2x board:

Some very piss poor framing here that relies way to much on fasteners. Would not be adequate for snow country, that is for sure.

New Hampshire is snow country!

Maybe it was training on “How not to frame”??

Well, it is not adequate framing for there.
