Those could be those OLD porous solid clay bricks((no holes). They weren’t fired well and no glazing. These were meant to be above ground and will crumble or disintegrate from being in moist soil. I used them when building my fireplace 25 years ago and they were fine because they were on top of a cement foundation, but I used the left over ones to lay an in ground patio…and they just broke down crumbled into powder. I used to replace the bad ones every year because I had lots left over and used a small garden shovel and an old spoon to remove the powdery crumbs. That’s all that was left.


I bought the bricks from someone who was demolishing an old building that was built back in the early 1900's.

They break easily and are very inconsistent in that some are quite soft and the next seems to be fired much harder ![icon_question.gif](upload://t2zemjDOQRADd4xSC3xOot86t0m.gif)
