Suggested PPE Items?

I have my eye on a little giant 16ft extension… it only weighs 28lbs …the 24ft weighs 44lbs. I figure for most houses the 16 footer will get me by… yeah they’re kinda expensive, but when you have 3 ruptured discs like I do, weight can make the difference, and you have to pay for that youthful invincible mindset eventually.

Brian, let me know how that works for you.

I always keep eye wash/eye drops with me. Theres been a couple times I’ve gotten dried bug guts or dust in my eyes and I would’ve been screwed without it.

I always wear timberlands. just last week i stepped on rebar that was jutting out of the ground that I didnt notice. It may have ripped through my foam running shoes I sometimes wear. (not to mention nails and whatnot)

I wear 3 mil nitrile gloves (heres 1000 for $71) under light-duty work gloves. (with the pointer and thumb finger tips cut off, i use an iphone for reporting)

I never get on a roof without my Cougarpaws boots, gloves and sunglasses.

I have three respirators: a half face p100 + nuisance VOC respirator for every day attic use, a half-face P100+VOC cartriges for new construction properties that are swimming in VOC’s and concrete dust, and a full face p100 for crawlspaces. (and also a bag of n95’s, incase of a client who is coughing up a storm with me in the house)

Altoids, deoderant + hand sanitizer for pre-walk through freshening up

A canister of lysol wipes

Always keep a roll of toilet paper or two in your vehicle.

Ozium is a great air freshener (it will eventually save you from embarrassment.)

Out of curiosity, what do you use that for? I’ve never seen first-hand a full blown electrical arc explosion, but I wouldn’t think that would offer much in the way of protection in that event. That said, obviously a pair of goggles aren’t going to help much either, so what else would you use that for? Somehow I’m having a hard time envisioning a respirator under that shield unless it were maybe an N95… so I am curious!

You can dump a lot of money fast. Honestly, the Sony Cybershot is a fine camera. I only went to the zoom because I wanted to shoot data plates on suspended equipment in warehouses. Also, you may want a back-up camera. You can buy two Sony’s which will also provide a back-up battery.

Additional things I recommend:
1: Tyvek Disposable full sleeved coverall. Much more comfortable that cloth/canvas.
Don’t use often but they neatly stow away and are readily accessible.

2: Polyurethane shoe gloves.

3: Good Safety First Aid Kit.

You are correct. # 3M Full Face Respirator.

Those are excellent Michael… thanks for the list, I see a few that will certainly be adopted in my own endeavors.

I was mentoring this new inspector and on every ride along, without fail, he would leave the inspection for 1/2 hour or so to find a gas station. He is on his own now, I am curious how he sorted this out

Anyone have any experience with this camera?

or this one?

I’d probably give the Ricoh a try if it had a better zoom, but I’m kinda liking the price on that Kodak - seems to be quite comparable to the $600 Canon Powershot SX70.

That kodak would be too bulky for me. I would sacrifice the zoom for compact size. I like my camera to slip in to the pouch. But everyone finds their system.

Steve, that Kodak is too big. I like my camera on a lanyard around my neck. I can easily slip it in my shirt pocket.

I use the Nikon Coolpix B500 and love the 40x zoom, yes it’s bulky but i am use to it.

That is a nice camera for inspections. Those few of us remaining that do not use our phones, I suspect cameras are considered bulky in general. So, we find a way

I use this for house shots and roof shots if needed.

Otherwise I use my Galaxy S-21, it take really nice shots and they go right into the report as I shoot them.

I also wear these pants with lots of pockets. So my camera, Leatherman, tape measure, receptacle tester, cough drops, keys, memory stick, keys and wallet are in my pants and I carry my phone in my shirt pocket.

No more tool belts or fanny packs. I do have a satchel that I use that I holds my cordless screwdriver, moisture meter, etc. when needed.

@kleonard, Nice pants, do you use the kneepads with yours?

You wear glasses, right? Think about it.

I find that the phone I use Galaxy S21 Ultra 5 G can be awkward to use as well as I use the otter box case that clips on my belt and has a design flaw for that phone, as it will only clip into the holder bass akwards, but again I have got used to it.

I have an otterbox on my iPhone… saved it on a couple of occasions when the phone fell into the hole I dug, with a foot or so of water in the bottom, for a underground water repairs. I have used a min-excavator to pull the pumps out of septic tanks… one of the guys dropped his brand new $1,200 phone out of his pocket into the tank… good thing he insured the phone - 'cause otterbox or not - nobody was going in to get that phone - lol

No, I tried them and they have special pad you stuff into the pocket, for me it was a hassle and not worth it, I wear the knee compression with the jell for the knees underneath.
