Unless someone could produce the manufacturers documentation showing that this method is one of the allowable installation methods for this fan, I’d say that this is at least a listing violation (110.3(B) in the 2005 NEC) Manufacturers instructions are to be followed when installing equipment.

Another violation, IMO, is " 400.8 Uses Not Permitted... (1) As a substitute for the fixed wiring of a structure."

The most important issues would be how it is attached to the cord, to the ceiling and that the swag kit was the kind using a ground wire.

I don’t like swag kits but once you get out beyond the plug things really become a little fuzzier from an NEC standpoint. This is not part of the building wiring so the new owner can simply take it down if they think it is a hazard.

Non permanent wiring. It’s a plug in fixture. Make the buyers aware, and tell them to get rid of it if they don’t like it!! icon_biggrin.gif

Seeing that I can't imagine there wouldn't be plenty of other decorating faux pas and real defects, or is that just how thangs is done in TX?
