I’m aware of him and have seen many of his videos. I will be monitoring the responses. This will be a long topic and great for discussion

What is the dispute between Cy Porter and Preston Kincaid about?

It is a social-media feud between two home inspectors.

Cy Porter runs CyFy Home Inspections in Arizona and posts heavily on TikTok. Preston Kincaid is Inspector Preston, a certified master inspector based in New York who also works in Pennsylvania and California. They have been at each other since about 2023.

The public split started over inspection calls. One early flashpoint was double-keyed exterior doors. Kincaid called them a safety hazard. Porter and other inspectors disagreed with how he framed defects and with his claim that his standard was higher. From there it became personal.

Kincaid’s account is that Porter spent more than a year posting about him, that Porter’s followers then sent threats and harassment, and that Porter rejected an offer to delete the videos and drop it. In October 2024 Kincaid posted “The Cy Porter Challenge,” saying he had not filed licensing complaints and asking to settle it. Porter’s side is that Kincaid misleads viewers, has been involved in complaints against Porter’s Arizona license, and later used Porter’s Arizona business name on a pay-to-play inspector list.

Both still post about the other. The substance underneath the insults is a disagreement over inspection standards, plus a fight over audience, licensing complaints, and use of Porter’s business name. The threats and the licensing claims are allegations each makes about the other.

I’ve watched some of his videos. Like him or not he’s a very good at content creation with his trademark “Cytations”, big hat, and rolls of blue tape. According to what I’ve seen he seems to work in an area where some of the new home builders are doing incredibly shoddy work and he calls them out to help home buyers get their problems fixed. The downside of calling out these big corporations is that they have tried to shut him down. They’ve filed complaints against him and tried to pull his license. In one such case they found no evidence that his videos showed staged or fake defects and he was therefore just showing the real issues that he found during an inspection.

He’s also famous for his internet squabbles. If any of you old timers remember Paul Abernathy from this forum for some reason he’s had an ongoing battle with him. Like any good content creator he has a knack for pulling you in to keep watching his videos and some of the things he finds are downright disturbing.

I watched some of his YouScrew videos with the builder defects. Good for him!! It appears though that Arizona has at least some better laws to protect the buyers as noted in his many “after closing” inspection finds. From the sounds of it there are tighter requirements at least for repairing defects found during his inspections.

He mentions Texas in one of the videos and here buyers are simply screwed!! The State does not care about bad building and screwed buyers. That is so much so that they allow Builders to use contracts that basically shield themselves from major defects.

Can’t say anything about his fight with the NY Home Inspector but wish him well on that too!

Cy Porter, Preston Kincade and a few others are TiK-Tok wonders that make more on thier social media than they did doing home inspections! They are basiclly doing the same as Mike Holmes did a decade ago. What they do hurts our profession and makes consumers think that all home inspectors and inspections should be done like they are doing!

That sounds very familiar. I have seen the exact scenario play out a couple thousand miles away where Big Con,struction builders “go after” inspectors doing a good job, trying to protect homeowners/consumers. There seems to be a pattern here.

My stepson brings up things he saw on Cy’s videos. I’ve never watched any of them. This is the first that I’ve heard of the “fight” between him and this Preston guy. It seems like mice fighting over the crumbs. Are we going to see this on CBS Nightly News? Is this something that Nick will look up from his morning cup of coffee to deal with? Maybe, but I kinda doubt it.

Kind of like this! https://www.youtube.com/shorts/s96u_OHC5vw?feature=share

Can you elaborate on the bold statement above?

Cy has posted here a few times over the years, and presented an issue or two for our review/opinions.
Nick basically “blew him off”.
Looks like he is attempting to get InterNACHI’s feedback again.
Based upon Nick’s posting habits, I suspect he has a preference for Preston, who seems to fit in with Nick’s business ideology.
I could be wrong, but I don’t think so.

Got and kept your attention though, didn’t it?!!

My wife is super into the Harry & Meghan gossip and all that royal stuff across the pond. Apparently there is a market for that sort of thing in the world of internet-famous home inspectors.

I don’t have much patience for grown ass men beefing with each other on social media. If one does not have the maturity to handle one’s business in private like a man, then how is one supposed to be mature enough to “police the industry”?

Yet, no involvement with the courts?

court disputes between Cy Porter and Preston Kincaid - Google Search
There are no official civil or criminal court lawsuits between home inspectors Cy Porter and Preston Kincaid. Instead, their highly publicized “court disputes” exist as an intense online legal and professional feud primarily involving licensing board complaints, review-bombing allegations, and threats of litigation. [1, 2]

The bad blood between Cyril “Cy” Porter (owner of Arizona-based CyFy Home Inspections) and Preston Kincaid (owner of New York-based Kincaid Home Inspection, known online as “Inspector Preston”) plays out across TikTok and Instagram. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6]

The primary points of contention between the two include:

  • The Initial Feud: The public disagreement originally ignited over technical inspection standards, most notably a heated debate over the safety and necessity of double-keyed exterior doors. [1, 2]
  • State Licensing Board Complaints: Porter has claimed that Kincaid and other out-of-state inspectors weaponized their networks to file formal, ethics-based regulatory complaints against his Arizona home inspection license. Porter was forced to undergo state investigations, though the Arizona Board of Technical Registration ultimately dismissed the primary standard-of-practice complaints against him. [1, 2]
  • Review Bombing and Defamation Claims: Kincaid has publicly accused Porter of weaponizing his massive social media following to generate hundreds of fake, negative 1-star Google reviews against Kincaid’s New York business, dropping his rating from a perfect 5.0 to 4.9. Porter has levied similar counter-claims about coordinated review attacks orchestrated against CyFy. [1, 2]
  • The “Pay-to-Play” Accusations: The dispute escalated further when Porter accused Kincaid of infringing on his trademarked business name in Arizona to funnel clients into a predatory or unauthorized “pay-to-play” inspector recommendation program. [1]

What Real Court Cases Exist?

While Porter and Kincaid haven’t sued each other directly in court, both have dealt with real legal battles involving third parties:

  • Cy Porter vs. Homebuilders: Porter famously survived a high-profile legal dispute with national homebuilder Taylor Morrison, which filed a massive complaint with the Arizona State Board attempting to suspend his license and force him to delete viral videos exposing their construction defects. The board ultimately ruled in Porter’s favor, protecting his right to post his findings. He has also faced legal threats from “TikTok Electricians”. [1, 2, 3, 4]

  • Preston Kincaid State Investigation: Kincaid has similarly documented his ongoing legal defense against a New York state investigator regarding separate complaints aimed at taking away his local inspection license.

That’s pretty much the line of thinking I had going through this thread and reading about their years long back and forth spat.

Spoken like a true gentleman. I’m thinking that the “this other guy in New York is a clown” type videos get many more clicks than showing nail pops on Sheetrock.

Chicanery for clicks which equate to money.

That’s cy porter, he is a real ass hat.

In all seriousness, how can two inspectors get into a heated argument over this???

I’ll elaborate. A quick check showed millions of views just for some of Porter’s videos. Two high profile “professionals” going to blows over a deadbolt lock? I’d say that’s a bad look for our profession. We see some pissing back and forth here, at times, but that’s mostly inside our family. Escalating a piddly little argument to this level, in public…Andrew’s comment is one that I’ll echo.

Is this worthy of our attention? I don’t know. I’ve never had a single client mention either guy’s name. So, though they obviously get lots of views, maybe it is just train-wreck watchers and curious fellow inspectors…who also like watching train wrecks.
