How far will most of you travel without charging an additional fee for mileage/time? Of course I realize this is skewed by how busy you have been at the time, but in normal circumstances?

Dave,

As a general rule I travel up to an hour away. I don't travel much further than that, so I don't have any additional charge that I add.

Good question. You have to calculate how far in time. From where Joe is he can go about 40 miles West or 8 miles East in a weekday morning hour.

Travel time analysis will result in you marketing heavily to your local real estate agent. Local focus marketing instead of light broad canvas marketing.

My reason for asking is I have one office in Springfield, MO, a city of a couple of hundred thousand people that are extremely unhappy with the inspectors there and have asked me to come up there. I have gotten 2 jobs from them already this month. They are about 70 miles away and I think they are definitely worthwhile. But by the time I add a little over 2 hours drive time, the inspection time, and the report time, I begin to wonder if it is worth in the long run. Right now, yes because I am glad to get the 2 a month.

Hi Dave,

I think you’re on the right track, whilst you develope your business you have to do all the running and probably eat the costs and loose the travel time, hopefully in future you can build up a good relationship with the realtors in Springfield and as volume increases get them to help you schedule maybe one day aweek in their area. If they like your work and recognise your putting yourself out for them they should help you out.

Hi Dave! I have an idea. Might sound crazy, might work. Try using the standard govn; rate of 36.5 cents a mile. For 70 miles you would get 25.55 You could split the cost between the inspections or charge to each one. maybe open an office in that city and try to line up enough inspections to do in a day. May be a realtor up there will let you use part of their office to work out of.
