Does anyone have a quick opinion as to whether non-underground romex is allowed in conduit that is underground? Doesn’t seem right to me.

No you can not use NM underground even in conduit it must be a wet location cable or conductor.

300.5(D)(5) Cables and insulated conductors installed in enclosures or raceways in underground installations shall be listed for use in wet locations.

Just for the record, if the cable was Type UF “Underground Branch Circut and Feeder” type, it would be designed for use in a wet location, buried, and including within a properly sized conduit of metal or nonmetallic materials.

Sometimes when in a basement you will find a box used where the inside wiring is run to that box to feed the Type UF or underground conductors to the outside.

Take a look a Table 310.13 if you have a copy of the NEC. If not search for it on the net.

Joe,

Thanks for the info. The lack of change to UF was my first clue that they just kept running the same wire. Simple enough fix though.
