Most of the water heater manufacturers make a direct vent model. Looks like that is an older State Industries model. Here’s a new one. http://www.statewaterheaters.com/lit/media/spec/res-gas/SDVG7-1-4.pdf


Should be something on the label/data plate about it being a direct vent model. And then there are powered direct vent models too...even more "diffferenter".

Go to the various web-sites (AO Smith, Rheem, Bradford White, State, etc) and take a look at the various models.

That vent appears to be a double walled vent (as Richard shows). As most w/h vents have a smaller diameter.


The outside channel brings in combustion air and the inside channel vents the gases.
