Hi all. I was doing an inspection yesterday and observed this pipe protruding from the sidewalk in the front yard by the street. It didn’t look to me like a likely buried oil tank, as I didn’t see 2 pipes and this one was about 1" od. The homeowner claimed to the buyers agent that it was part of the city’s shutoff valve for the water supply. Obviously it doesn’t look like the standard cover for a shutoff. Does anyone know what this could be? Anyone seen this before? Relatively new to it. I appreciate your experience and input. Thanks.
Pretty hard to be certain what it is for without being there and possibly digging it up..
Describe what you see (including a trip hazard) and recommend your client ask the homeowner…ask in writing and get answer in writing.
My guess is in line with what the seller is claiming. It looks like a curb box without it’s cap.
Both a safety hazard and a huge pain if kids fill it with rocks.
Could have been a homemade conduit for a lamp post at one time.
That would be my guess too. It certainly looks like it. Did you shine a flashlight down it to see if you can see the corporation valve?
Ha! My daughter is going to love this response! Make me laugh out loud too.
Ah, good idea! I will do that when I pick up radon in just a bit. Thanks!
Thanks all, for the responses and advice!
That concrete looks to be ‘old’. How old is the home?
Note: That pipe section appears to be inserted into a 3-4 inch diameter hole in the concrete. More curious is what was the hole originally intended for? A wooden fence post? Gas-Light pole? Too many possibilities to guess at!
I think Larry has it …
