Why check water heater flue pipe requirements?

A few pictures says it all.

What was the appliance served? single/double wall?

Water heater single walled aluminum pipe all the way from the water heater in the basement up through a hidden chase and up through the roof. It was non-compliant from the water heater to the termination point on the roof.

Madness…

And recheck them after the roof is replaced. I’ve found several detached vents lately after recent roof replacements. Sometimes at the roof, sometimes all the way down at the furnace. It even happened in my parent’s house. I just happened to open the furnace closet and found the PVC ripped off the top of the furnace and they had just done their roof. Watching guys demo roofs it’s no wonder it happens. They just fire away with the shovel/chisels.

6" to 36" depending on the equipment. This was a fire waiting to happen, and it did.

These are from a PP presentation that I occasionally do…

And none of these clearances require actual empty space, which lets attic smells into the living space.

A non-combustible collar can be used to air seal the annular space.
