Wind Mitigation Report: is this considered a "clip"?

This was the roof to wall attachment for a house I inspected today. The blown in Fiberglass insulation was covering it up. I did my best to clear it out the way without falling through the attic :joy:

I don’t think that’s a roof/wall intersection, or it’s not the bottom of it.

Is that OSB sheathing vertical?

And that’s cellulose insulation, FYI.

Looks like a truss plate to me.

Thank you for the correction. I couldn’t see anything beyond this wall in the attic. House was built 1986. Looks like OSB on the wall but the deck sheathing is plywood.

I thought so as well but I didn’t know if could be marked as a clip or not. There is wood wall raised to roof and I cant see beyond that. Thanks for the reply

I have never seen a truss plate as a clip.

If a house of that age is on block (cmu) there will probably be a strap with 2 nails. It still doesn’t qualify as a clip unless it gets the third nail.

In a few cases of homes of that age that had straps, the owner paid to get the 3rd nail added. They had to pull down the soffits to add the nail, then it qualifies as a clip even through it’s a strap. It’s not a “strap” because it doesn’t go over the top and get nailed on the other side.

If this house is stick built, it’s toenails almost certainly.

Thank you Mark. I appreciate the reply!

Noah, where are you located? Wind MITs can be complicated till you go through a few. There are a LOT of variables and this is one many mistake. You would benefit from someone who can help and I’ve helped many others. I’m in Tampa. Look me up Handy Vet Inspections.

Looks like a truss gusset plate from here.

Thanks Robert, I’m on the East side of Florida. Specifically the Treasure Coast. Since the roof to wall attachment couldn’t be seen cause of the knee wall ( I believe its called), I marked it as unknow. I didn’t know if this gusset plate could be called a “clip”

Thank you Dave I appreciate the reply.

Noah, you need an extension pole of some type to push away the insulation from a distance. This won’t be the last time you encounter a RTW that’s buried or not accessible. It can also hold your phone/camera closer to the item being photographed.

Also, next time look somewhere else (if possible), I doubt the entire perimeter has the same wall construction detail.

I bring old golf club wedge clear some insulation, but maybe a small plastic garden rake would be a better idea. Ill be looking for a camera extension. That’s a great idea. I couldn’t find any other attic access points. Homeowner husband passed away and she didn’t know of any beside the garage entry.

Hey Dom I went back to the property found another attic acess point but it was against the gable and no vision of the eaves. I did find this with toe nails.

Maybe it’s because I’m not in Florida, but I don’t see any toe nailing in those photos. Lots of shiners through the roof decking though.

Thanks Mike. Yeah dont think the roofers missed much😂

This would go down as toenail on the wind mitigation - there’s nothing to qualify for anything else.

And my favorite tool in the attic is a 10’ selfie stick.

Thank you Jeremy :folded_hands: Y’all have been a great help. Appreciate the quick reply.
