Window install on top of trim

Forgive me for my ignorance, but are these windows installed incorrectly? My instinct says yes as it appears to be installed on top of the trim and you can see broken pieces of the edge.I have never seen an install like this. Please correct me if I am wrong.

The window frame design is likely similar to this…

Or, a piece of J flashing may have been installed around the window frame to accept the trim.

I see, thank you. Sometimes I over think things.

Is it just the one or multiple windows that are damaged?

It can happen when the window or siding around it is installed when it is bitter cold, and the vinyl becomes brittle.

Yeah, three windows were like this, though this was the worst one.

My opinion, window improperly installed.
No drip cap.
