Wood-Destroying Organism Inspection Course

Hello All,
Here is an item or potential way that termites or wdi may develop or to maybe help prevent them.
Leaving building materials beside your home is a way for wood destroying insects to develop.

Hello,

First time doing this. Please be patient. I uploaded a photo of the trim on my own front door trim…have a little dry rot going on and need to replace it soon.

Charles

Here is a picture I took of termite damage noted in the garage door jamb framing. The termite activity appeared to have emanated from wood to ground contact at the garage door jamb. Treatment for termites was recommended as was replacement of any damaged framing members.

alot to no about termites.

WDO going on now

Here is a photo of a deck/roof support post. It has a large open crack that runs the length of the post to the ground. It has the potential to allow moisture penetration which can contribute to both decay and or support WDO.

I completed the WDO inspection on my home. Most WDO are not an issue where I live due to the extreme cold winters. That said I did find an area of potential decay or carpenter ant habitat on a structural deck post which is in contact with the ground. This post is sunk into the soil below the frost line and is treated but has a large crack in it that is definitely allowing moisture penetration. Monitor for future issues.

The additional reading articles I read were “Wood Decay” & “Termite Baits”. Both good articles, and found it interesting that 10% of wood production every year goes toward the repair of damages from WDO. Also liked the environmental benefits of using bait traps in comparison with pesticide applications, despite their long term use needs.

Hi Everyone, Just completing WDO course.

Picture of Carpenter Bee damage

As you see in the photograph, the structure has firewood stacked too close to the residence. I would advise the owner to relocated the firewood away from the residence as not to allow Wood Destroying Insects like Carpenter Ants a chance to infiltrate the residence. Sorry the image is upside down.

Here is a photo showing wood rot in the facial board and soffit of a home. The tree branches are touching the wood and roof. This can allow carpenter ants into the home. also the branches are on the roof which can cause damage.P3121357.JPG

This is the termite bait system around the buildings of my condo complex. They are planted about every 10 feet around the perimeter of the building. I have witness the pest control company check them monthly.

Philosophical question: After swarming and egg laying, who is there to feed the first termite larva that hatch?

Hi all,
I am just wondering if we would get many Wood destroying organisms here in Calgary Alberta Canada, because of the winter temperature?

Also a little note about the introduction to the course, it says there are 10 quizzes, when there are 20 in all. Just something to maybe look at.
Thanks for all the help so far,
regards
Carl

Hi, Carl. There are actually 85 quiz questions in 10 quizzes. The last quiz is “Chapter 20 Quiz,” but not every chapter has a quiz. I see you’ve taken many courses this year and scoring very high in your final exams. Great job. Keep going.

My latest inspection found Termite damage directly below the rear entrance door. Mud tubes found running up the 4+4 support post directly inserted into the ground, no footing, and in below the siding. Damage to Double sill plate, Rim joist and floor joists.
Just completed the Wood-Destroying Organism Course and found it very helpful…
Thanks

Hi all

I have just passed the WDO exam. Interesting stuff. I watch the video on carpenter ants, really interesting. I read more information in the library Ant inspection. All inspectors should read this, something to look out for. The sawdust in a pile up the deck post, really good point to look out for.
Many thanks again guys

Ants in a tree next to a house. I can really understand how easy it is for the ants to spread into the house.
