I just inspected a wood foundation. You really can not see much with a full basement. Does anyone have any suggestions on what to look for, besides the normal stuff (grading, raingutters, etc

Yes, Water on the inside of the basement. I have never seen a wood foundation that remained dry for very long after it was constructed.

A properly constructed wood foundation system is less likely to have water in the basement than any type of concrete foundation structure. A wood foundation is more or a “system” for keeping out water than a typical concrete foundation is. There are many other advantages to wood foundations as well, including having greater hydrostatic pressure resistance than concrete foundations. There is good info at the Weyerhauser site, as they developed the system for use in perma-frost construction in Alaska.

It is easier to change direction than it is to forget where one has been.

Wood foundations seem to do well in more arid areas with dry soil conditions and limited termite and decay probablility … in other areas damage over time is possible. Even if properly treated lumber is used, the cut ends are suseptable since they only get a field treatment (if at all).

I am absolutely amazed sometimes by how much thought goes into doing things wrong
