For the ICC exams they have an allowed reference set that can be used for their open book tests. These are generally only the IRC, IBC, etc., actual code books. Each test has a list of approved references the test taker can bring/use. These are listed in their course catalog here https://www.iccsafe.org/certification-exam-catalog/ .

The tabs can be helpful but why would you want someone else’s marked up copy of a code book? Not only can that cause confusion but if they did not use ink or other permanent marking and the test center sees it they will fail the test on you.
Testing has come a ways since I tested in 2004. Back then we could not have any markings in any code books brought in.

Yep, Missed this part!
I ended up buying a copy on the 2021 IRC it actually came today. Thank you for the feedback because I didn’t know that about the test, as far as you could have your book on site. I will research the parameters around testing, I would hate to end up failing for bad insight or for work that’s not mine.
I will be get my tabs this week.
You can test remotely from your home. They also have online Code books that are available for use during the exam. I found both hard copy and the online electronic options to be useful while taking the test. They also have practice quizzes.
