Don’t use Yahoo, ugh, there are lots of other inexpensive options out there…

Lots of them.

This is the one that I use.

I started with a free site on Yahoo’s Geocities. As a matter of fact the index.html is still there drawing some click thrus to my new site.

http://www.geocities.com/b4uclose/index.html

It was 'ok" but not great. Ad's go with the free site and people left as soon as the ad's started showing.

I moved it to www.tripod.com. www.b4uclose.com

No HTML experience used or needed. Don't try to get to fancy. You want fast loading pages. About $15.00 a month for it.

Register your own domain name with a domain name registrar BEFORE you do anything. I did b4uclose.com with www.namesecure.com.

You get a free one with a tripod account, HOWEVER, they somehow legally control it and you MUST continue your account with them to keep using the name. That's where I got www.b4uclose.net.

I suggest you do a web search on "free website hosting" and try several of them with the free account or a bogus name. Explore, play with them, see if you like them, but don't put a lot of effort into them. After you've tried several, you'll have a better grounding to make a decision.

Here's just a few.
http://www.tripod.com
http://www.50megs.com/

A listing of several is available at

http://www.thefreesite.com/Free_Web_Space/

Remember, get your own domain name first. I use www.namesecure.com's redirect service to get www.b4uclose.com to send people to my site on tripod at http://b4uclose.tripod.com.

Be aware. Some search engines don't like redirects.

Do some study on search engine optimization also.

I've put some other stuff on the board too. Search for ecrofutt and host or website.

Good Luck!

What I use and I think that it works great is… I registered my domain with Registerfly.com for 7.99 for the year. After that I went to surpasshosting.com and got 500MB of space for 6.00 a month. It comes with a very easy to use control panel. And if you have Front Page or something like that it will upload automatically.

Also comes with POP E-mail, and autoresponders...

Well, everybody has a different approach, so I’ll share mine:

*Registered my domain with doteasy.com. Cost $25/year to register. Comes with absolutely Free hosting, no ads, 10 email accounts. Good system - absolutley no complaints.

*Then I built(am still building) a site on bydesignwebsights.com They will offer you a DotNetNuke portal for free. (Of course, they will try to get you to upgrade). If you know a little HTML, you can create a very good site in no time. Very powerfull stuff.

*I then redirected the site I built to my internet adress(easy stuff). So, you type my homepage and will always see my homepage in the address bar, but it is really reading a completely different site.

do any of you know how long a domain name is good for?

If I only register for 1 year what are my rights to the name? do I have first option to renew the name at the end of the year or do I lose it?

thanks

Domain names are good for a year at most places. I think some you can do longer. The best thing to do is keep your CC on file with the registrar that way they can renew it for you. I messed that up with my gjohnson.org and someone came and stole it from me the day it expired.
