Looking for thoughts on Zip System sheathing installations. It is in a lot of new builds around here and two very common issues seem to be over driving nails half the thickness of the material and not rolling the seam tape to really activate the adhesive. Huber looks pretty easy going with their minimum installation requirements. I’ve seen leaks that were likely coming from fish mouth gaps in the tape so I kinda harp on the importance of proper install with clients. What are you guys seeing with this product? It’s still likely better than the cheap builder branded woven wrp that is more common.
I stopped to look at a few going up around our area and my biggest question is what happens after the 30 year limited warranty expires.
I’ve wondered about that too. Off course very little new construction seems to think about that kind of time line.
I’ve used it and recommend it as long as it is installed properly! I do see some cases of over driven nails but the worst problem is the lack of rolling of the tape. Huber even put it on the tape every so many feet “Roll the tape” in English and Spanish and they still can’t figure it out.
The way building happens anymore I doubt a house gets to 30 years without falling apart anyhow!
New system as I was leaving construction.
Besides following manufacturer instructions (roll the tape at the seams), my concern is flashing and nailing flange sealing at the window and door head. Same with material transition flashings.
I resisted Zip System and stayed with plywood/OSB and house wrap. IMO, house wrap and even felt are good WRB’s. Less subject to human error & installation issues.
There are good builders here who are doing fine with Zip System and are following manufacturer installation instructions. Builder integrity and quality are more important with this system.
The same craftsmanship I see with other building systems, which is fair to poor installation in most cases.
Hey probably figure that rolling around in the back of the truck is good enough!
