After seeing this roof structure yesterday, I am questioning its integrity, based on undersized lumber, and lack of proper ridge beam. 2x4s were used from the ceiling joist to the rafters spaced 24" OC. They did not appear to be engineered trusses. Is this sound for the load it’s carrying?
They look like engineered trusses from what I can see.
Those pictures are inadequate.
Can you post pictures that can be enlarged?
Larry,
Thanks for your quick response. I felt that if they were engineered, it was a poor construction. Perhaps made to appear as engineered. Maybe I’m being too picky or seeing something that isn’t there as I was thrown off by the 2x4s. Here is a link to all the photos that may offer more insight. Feel free to copy/paste
Based on what exactly? They look fine from here.
Those are almost certainly “engineered”. That is, designed probably by a computer program. That is quite a configuration but appear to be performing. Age is a consideration if you have concerns. If that roof is five or more years old and shows no evidence of stress or failures, I think it is likely good to go.
Hi Morgan. Thanks for the additional pictures.
Is there anything that you can point to that reinforces your thought that it is “poor construction"?
To me, it looks like a typical truss frame roof. I didn’t see anything that appeared out of wack.
It looks okay from here.
I agree, an interesting configuration. I don’t see engineered trusses often in my area(maybe 2 houses in my 3 years of inspecting), so I appreciate your professional insight.
And what exactly is the “load” it carries, (besides it’s own weight)?
Hope you are a structural engineer.
Nothing wrong that I can see, that’s an engineered truss system, so…
