Air Handler installed in Basement inside the floor trusses

(I’m going to piggy back off of Kevin’s thread of a similar title)

I know, this should be in the WTF thread but I thought this one deserved one on it’s own.
I’ve never have seen this before.
Air handler installed in the basement inside the floor trusses. the only way to remove the unit is to:

  1. Destroy the floor structure to pull it down
  2. Cut a hole in the side of the house and slide it out.
  3. Cut it out in pieces and put the new one in a different location.

What was the builder thinking?

Just when you think you’ve seen it all. :flushed:

What I have seen here in TN, a new unit is installed elsewhere. The old one stays put.

Lots of water heaters in the attic w/o access to remove also.

I wonder how they service the unit?

Good point. An HVAC guy came to do a tune-up and said he really couldn’t access it in that location and he didn’t do the job.

My sentiments exactly.
To me, as long as there is clearance to maintain the unit, nothing wrong in my books.

Morning, Bert.
Hope your are well and in good spirits today.

Hydronic AHU?

You know the old saying; One mans ceiling is another mans floor. It all depends upon where you are standing.

I have seen many hydronic AHU package units in commercial settings in structural masonry building. Quite popular in my neck of the woods.
These Small hydronic package units, AHU, are tucked between a drop down false ceiling and the flooring above. Typically wedged between steel truss corrugated sheet metal with concrete on top.

As long as there is service clearance or a way to remove the AHU, I see no issues.

Hello Robert.
I hope you are well.

My post was about the air handler being installed in the floor trusses. 16" centers.
This is a weird location.

That’s a very good point. Every air handler I inspect that has the installation manual nearby requires 24 inches in front of the access panel.

I concur. Definitely not typical.

Builders and installers don’t care when they don’t have to deal with it again.
