Sounds like an all expense paid trip for the Cdn. Ashi rep to a conference no one from Ontario will be attending.

I use to belong to ASHI as a certified member, and I finally realized that I was not being served by them other than writing their exams as a requirement to qualify at the time in Onatrio (OAHI), it was a waste of money in my opinion.

Alden Gibson keeps plying ASHI at our Toronto meeting groups and from what I can see there is always very little interest. But, know one has told him that, and he hasn't figured it out yet; I don't one to be the one to tell him. ![icon_eek.gif](upload://yuxgmvDDEGIQPAyP9sRnK0D0CCY.gif)

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Time for a few laughs!!!

In my fall issue of "The Canadian Home Inspector" received from Ontario Association of Home Inspectors (OAHI) there is a few paragraphs from the Ontario Representative of ASHI named Alden E. Gibson RHI.

And I quote:
"In July I attended the Town Hall meeting in Washington D.C. along with the ASHI BOD meeting. The 'Branding' campaign is well on its way and we will learn more about it at the October Chapter Leadership Day and Board of Directors meeting in Chicago on October 24 & 25. I serve on the Membership Committee for ASHI, and at our last meeting in September, we proposed some changes to the membership policy that will affect Canadians: if they are approved, it will be a positive step. More details to follow. It is my understanding for now that Canadian members will not be charged the additional $250 fee. At this time the $250 fee is only for the U.S., although they are looking into this matter to see how they can bring ASHI 'Branding' to Canada. Plan to attend Inspection world in Albuquerque N.M. on January 15-17, 2004!"

Discuss amongst yourselves!!

I’ve been, and still am, an ASHI member for about 14 years. Being as ASHI is now turning into a ‘marketing association’, a lot of older ASHI members have become disgusted with it, some have left and others (like myself) have not.

If it is now a "marketing association" (which is what ASHI Branding is trying to do), then why not branch out and 'market' with other associations? Maybe something beneficial for all of us will result from it?

Jerry,

OAHI adopted all of ASHI's SOP's and COE's and figures to be one and the same.
I for one would love to see more than one organization for us inspectors to choose from. It would also be nice to see the different organizations get along and co-operate to get this industry the recognition, and in some areas, the regulation that it requires.
The problem as I see it is that OAHI and indeed ASHI in many places has tried unsuccessfully to have their organization brought into exclusive power as the regulating body over all inspectors.
In turn meaning that if I want to be a home inspector I either join that association or I do not work!
Sorry but that is pure bu*s#!t!!!!!!
Competition is healthy. It keeps everyone involved honest and hard working.
Monopolies do not help anyone but the top 10% - 30% of the company, organization etc. that leads that monopoly!
In Ontario there used to be a second organization with which inspectors could join, and it "amalgamated" with OAHI making OAHI the only ruling body.
Hence the forming of NACHI in Ontario, thanks to Nick et al.

First you say you want more than one organization, and then you obviously recognize that there is more than one organization because you want to see the "different organizations" play nicely.

Anyway, I joined eight trade associations during my first year in business to see what they offered me as a home inspector:

CREIA
ASHI
SPREI
AAHI
NAHI
HIF
FREA
NAHB

along with

BBB
GSDBA
WCR
SDAR

Talk about alphabet soup.

I'll send one of my margaritas overnight delivery to the first person who can tell me the correct names for all those initials. I think all of them are on the Internet somewhere.

Robert makes some good points. In Ontario to be an home inspector one does not require one to join OAHI. Many inspectors do not belong to any Assoc. All you have to do is look at OAHI website to see the comparison between OAHI and NACHI. Actually there is no comparison.

We in OAHI have been complaining and calling for a password protect website for sometime, but OAHI does not want to set something up because they do not want to deal with real time issues. Just look through the OAHI site and you will see information that Joe Shmoe Public should not be privy to, including such infom calling for members whoes insurance has lapsed to send in their certificate, or the pdf files that the consumer should not be able to see as these are internal policy papers.

Raymond,

If you are meaning password access to limit the use to only those inspectors who are registered members of the group, that is very simple, I did it for the Gulfstream ASHI web site pages we did not want to be public.

Once set up and everyone is given their password, you simply need to log in.

I did the same thing on my web site for client access to their reports, you can try it by clicking on the "Client Reports" link. It brings up a login window, login as shown for a guest to view a sample report (which, by the way, I need to up date as those are not quite current).

web site!

Good morning Jerry,

Yes setting up a password protected site is simple, too simple for the simple minds of OAHI.
We have been waiting since April 03 when we were promised a secure site. Well it is now November and still no improvement. Why is this the case you may ask?

That is because the BOD of OAHI have no intention of giving the members what they want, but more importantly they realize that by protecting the site and offering the members a discussion area, they (BOD) will become liable for reading and acting upon any questions, or other discussions that need to be dealt with. You have heard the saying, "ignorance is bliss"? It seems our current BOD is to busy formulating how to make themselves look good, and protecting their little executive club that is rife with conflict of interest.

Again any astute person looking at NACHI and OAHI would quickly come to the conclusion that there is no comparison between the two websites with NACHI being far superior. OAHI consists of roughly I believe 700 or so members so there are the numbers that would support a far superior website, but our Assoc. is running around spending money on other less worthy projects.

Russel,

My guess would be the CREIA. Even though my first thought would be that they would have more wine than anything else, oops wait a second...... Whine would be that other organization you joined first ![nachi_sarcasm.gif](upload://6HQh6KbNiD73gqTNQInjrR2zeJw.gif)

The best margaritas? Why, NACHI, of course. The best nachis have fresh chips, Mexican jalapeno cheese, Velveeta cheese, some hot Pace Picante sauce, shredded chicken or beef, fresh diced tomatoes, sliced jalapenos, and, of course, the margarita. Wait, that’s nachos I’m thinking about. Darn Sunday margaritas.
