Can you fellow Home Inspectors give me some feedback on why I am hearing that ASHI is not a user friendly membership. Is it worth being an ASHI member or is it worthless?
I would like to hear from present members who are happy or unhappy with ASHI membership. And what advantages or disadvantages are there?

David,
The first thing you need to do is decide what your wants and needs are for membership in an association.
If you are looking for low cost, helpful information NACHI is the way to go. We do a considerable amount for our members for free. We have a helpful free library with some videos. We accept anything you do (courses, testing, books etc...), in the home inspection field, toward continuing education requirements here in PA.
I can not comment on being happy with the ASHI membership because I have never been one and I never will be. I joined those that offered the most for the least amount of money. I have heard the same things that you have about ASHI and no I am not PRO-ASHI. Is what I will say is that I know many ASHI inspectors that are good people and have nothing what so ever to do with the crap you are hearing about ASHI, just a small few of them. Again it is a personal choice. You must decide what you want and what you need and go with the association that offers that to you.

Our NACHI membership is now 21% ASHI. We have not been tracking this long enough to see if the ASHI members that joined us at NACHI will or will not renew their ASHI memberships or not, so we don’t know if they are jumping ship or sailing both. Either way is OK. Igor keeps correctly reminding me that ASHI national and ASHI inspectors are 2 different things. We like ASHI members. We are pretty close to getting a Maine NACHI Chapter up and it looks like it will be made up of about a dozen mostly veteran ASHI members.
If you are only thinking about what is best for you...and there is no shame in doing this especially when you are first starting out...I would say that NACHI's $289 is worth about $20,000 and no other association I'm aware of provides such a lopsided value return. This doesn't mean that other associations offer nothing...It is just that I am convinced NACHI provides the most by far.

I’ll throw in another name in the hat. I’m a member of NAHI. Joined NAHI because the HI school I attended recommended NAHI over ASHI for various reasons. NAHI also has a Michigan Chapter so that works well for networking with HIs and gaining knowledge.
When the funds allow I will join NACHI too, this message board is great, much better then NAHIs plus the other support materials I read about on the website make a NACHI membership look attractive.

For the most part NAHI guys are awfully nice. My former partner Dan Keogh is a NAHI, NACHI, ASHI member and he’d agree. Throughout the whole country, only one NAHI Chapter (NEPAHI) gave us any problems. I think NAHI calls themselves the “home inspector-friendly” association at www.nahi.org and I find it to be true.

I was typing my post while you were posting yours so I didn't get to read it first but your last line is an example of what I mean. Everywhere I go NAHI inspectors generally compliment NACHI, while ASHI Chapter heads generally view us as some sort of threat (like if we get too big we're going to outlaw ASHI or something...the way they tried to outlaw other associations).
I've gone to quite a few NAHI meetings and was always welcomed warmly.

I’m a little upset by ASHI at this time. I moved to Indiana from Kentucky and live next to IL. To inspect homes in IL, I have to take a two week class for about $2000 to learn the same thing I learned two years ago from the same book. I have to take the class from a school that the state recommends which is almost a ASHI class. I feel that if you can pass the test and you have enouph inspections under you belt, nobody should have to take the class if they don’t want to. I think it’s a waste of time and money to some people. Luckly I have enouph work in Indiana not to worry about IL. But it still hold me back. Thanks ASHI!
In Kentucky, I also had to take a test to be a HVAC Tech when I moved there. I wasn't required to take a class. The Test was hard but I did pass with studying and past experience. So this idea of just taking a test isn't something new.
It sounds like ASHI told IL what to do.
I don't believe everything ASHI believes in and that's why I don't join ASHI. If ASHI thinks that if you aren't a member of ASHI, then you are not fully trained. Bull!
