Balcony joists sistered

Check this out. Sistered to the cantilever balcony joists. I assume the old joist ends rotted out at some point.

3 screws and 3 sets, spaced roughly 32 inches and about 16. They appear to be standard construction screws not any sort of structural screws as far as I can tell.

Is there a question in there somewhere?

I wouldn’t call it cantilevered now due to the band joist at the outer end. Looks to me the balcony was extended out. Some serious math will be involved to determine the the load capacity.

Good call! And no there wasn’t a question. Just sharing what I saw today!

Please don’t create a separate post for something we see all the time and you’re not in need of help. Maybe put it on the WTF thread?

Whoa bud. Apologies. I was on my phone and created it. Hopefully I never make that mistake again. Please forgive me. I don’t want to offend anyone by sharing with a thread again. Also, WTF? thread? Seems like one of our resident P.E.s had something to offer. Can’t be that bad…

Glad he was able to help you out.

And glad you weren’t David. I was simply sharing something within the relative topic. It wasn’t necessarily a WTF moment. It’s something I see regularly. Which I wouldn’t categorize as WTF after doing 10 inspections a week for the past 7 years.

I know Jeffrey personally, so I wont hold it against him for his statement, he always responds similarly, quickly, and he usually has something very relevant to add to a post.

Consider how most people come to these posts. It’s either through membership or the incredible amount of SEO a forum can provide. Often times they get answers to their questions through posts just like this, whether or not the topic is specifically related to it. In many instances recently it just seems like we’re arguing with eachother rather than helping and sharing insight.

Regardless, I appreciate your insight and for putting me in my place for posting in the incorrect place on a specialist forum for home inspectors. You really taught me something today and I hope to god I will never make the mistake again. Hopefully it didnt take too much time out of your day and I can repay you someday, for I am forever in your debt.

It was just a request. Didn’t mean to upset you so bad. Enjoy your day

Exactly what I would expect to happen with this terrible design.

Not really there is that band joist against another wall, but it was over the siding. No posts otherwise.
